Denver Health, reportedly the oldest hospital in Denver, Colorado, has begun committing what the media is calling “elective” abortions. The hospital had already been committing so-called “medically necessary abortions” but has since expanded to allow unrestricted abortion at its new Reproductive Choices Clinic.
All induced abortions are “elective” as there is never a medical need to intentionally and directly kill a preborn child. If the mother’s life or health is at risk, the standard practice is to perform a preterm delivery or an emergency C-section. Neither of these procedures involves ensuring the child dies before delivery. A pregnancy can be terminated without murdering the child.
Dr. Spencer McClelland is the medical director of Denver Health’s new abortion facility, and he said that Denver Health has a “mission to take care of the most vulnerable patients in our population.” He added that this “mission” was not “being fully met until we started providing” unrestricted first-trimester abortion. Denver Health is currently committing “elective abortions” through 11 weeks, but McClelland said there are already talks of an expansion.
Colorado has no laws protecting preborn children from abortion at any point during pregnancy, meaning so-called “elective abortions” can be committed through all 40 weeks. Denver Health is actively killing the most vulnerable humans on the planet — preborn children who are defenseless against the adults around them.
In the first 13 weeks, an abortion is typically carried out through the abortion pill or a suction D&C abortion. The first drug of the two-drug abortion pill regimen is mifepristone, and it deprives the developing baby of nutrients by counteracting the natural pregnancy hormone progesterone. Then the second drug, misoprostol, causes contractions that expel the baby.
In a D&C abortion, an abortionist uses strong suction to essentially vacuum out the uterus, tearing the baby to pieces as it does. These human beings, in the first weeks of their lives, are the most vulnerable among us. Abortion destroys them.
For women who can’t afford the abortion, McClelland says there is the Cobalt Abortion Fund, which will cover the cost of the abortion including travel-associated costs. The hospital still has its payday.
“Denver Health has a Labor & Delivery Unit, where they do everything they can to keep their patients’ unborn babies alive before, during, and after birth. In that part of the hospital, they know the fetus is a unique human being whose life is worthy of protection at all costs,” said Colorado Right to Life President Will Duffy. “Now that Denver Health is doing abortions in another section of the hospital, they are without excuse. The same tiny human beings in the womb that they refer to as a baby in one part of the hospital, are now going to have their lives ended in a different area of the hospital. And they will not call them a baby in that area, so as to not remind everyone involved of the reality of what they are doing. This is tragic and nothing to be celebrated.”
