A 29-year-old man in Tennessee has allegedly admitted that he killed his pregnant girlfriend on January 20 because she refused to abort their preborn baby.
Vidol Wegner is facing charges of two counts of first-degree murder as well as felony murder, after authorities found the body of his girlfriend, 30-year-old Ariel Nevills, in their home in Spring Hill, Tennessee. Nevills was seven months pregnant at the time. According to an arrest affidavit, Wegner used “both hands around the neck and his forearm” to kill Nevills. He allegedly admitted to strangling her “two different ways” with the intent to kill both her and her baby because she was unwilling to get an abortion.
After she was dead, he called the authorities.
After his arrest, Wegner was interviewed by local news station WKRN, where he refused to take the blame for Nevills’ death, saying “she did it to herself.”
“She did it to herself. I told her this is the way. I had a beautiful future set up for us. She wanted to act crazy. She chose this. It didn’t have to be this way,” Wegner said.
He went on, “Listen, when I started that relationship, I told her, ‘If we get pregnant, are we going to do something about it?’ She said, ‘Yeah.’ She found out 10 weeks in; she said, ‘I want to keep it.’ I’m like, ‘Didn’t we have that conversation? I’m not doing this.’ She said, ‘Yeah.’”
Later in the interview, Wegner said, “She was stable, she was calm; I liked that, you know what I mean? She took care of me, it was peace, and then she gets pregnant and everything changes.”
Homicide is one of the leading causes of death of pregnant women, exceeding all the leading health-related causes of maternal mortality. In many cases these women are killed after they refuse an abortion.
Wegner is being held without bond, and is next set to appear in court on February 3.
