DNC Chair: Every Democrat must support abortion

In recent months, there has seemingly been a backlash against pro-abortion extremism in the Democratic Party. And after suffering widespread losses on election day in November, the only question was, would Democrats listen, and stop alienating pro-lifers? The answer, apparently, is no.

On Friday, Democratic National Committee Chairman Tom Perez spoke about abortion, and said that the DNC would only support pro-abortion candidates, calling it “non-negotiable.”

“Every Democrat, like every American, should support a woman’s right to make her own choices about her body and her health,” Perez said. “That is not negotiable and should not change city by city or state by state. At a time when women’s rights are under assault from the White House, the Republican Congress, and in states across the country, we must speak up for this principle as loudly as ever and with one voice.”

Perez’s comments come on the heels of controversy surrounding Heath Mello, a Democrat running for mayor of Omaha, Nebraska. Mello supports legalized abortion, but has supported commonsense restrictions on abortion, including informed consent laws. That this would draw the ire of pro-abortion Democrats just further goes to prove how extreme the party has become on abortion.

For the first time in history, the 2016 official Democratic Party platform called for repealing the Hyde Amendment, even though Americans overwhelmingly don’t support taxpayer funded abortion. The party has made it clear that pro-lifers are not welcome, leaving pro-life Democrats struggling to find a place to belong. The majority of Americans — including Democrats — support pro-life laws, including parental consent requirements, 24-hour waiting periods, a ban on partial-birth abortion, ultrasound requirements, and informed consent laws. These are all things that the abortion industry fights, and evidently, that is who the Democratic Party thinks it now serves.

Considering that around one-third of Democrats identify themselves as pro-life, this kind of mentality seems odd, and it clearly isn’t going to help them win.
