There are a plethora of nonfiction pro-life books to read, including Live Action founder Lila Rose’s work Fighting For Life. When it comes to the world of fiction, pro-life sensibilities are often told in a subtle way, leaving the values to the reader’s imagination. That being said, several authors have succeeded in capturing the culture of life while exposing the dark side of the abortion industry. Here are five pro-life novels you have to read (warning: possible spoilers ahead!):
Tilly by Frank Peretti
Originally written as a Focus On The Family radio drama, this 1988 novella tells the story of a couple who share a secret that is revealed when they find a gravestone with only one name — the name given to their child who died during an abortion.
The Ishbane Conspiracy by Randy Alcorn, Angela Alcorn, & Karina Alcorn
Told in the style of C.S. Lewis’s The Screwtape Letters, the 2001 book primarily focuses on the life of teenager Jillian. There is a subplot involving her best friend, Brittany, who becomes pregnant by her boyfriend. With a tennis scholarship hanging in the balance, she considers abortion, especially after bring pressured by her boyfriend and an acquaintance who dabbles in the occult.
The Giver by Lois Lowry
While the 1993 novel primarily focuses on themes of freedom and friendship, there is a subplot in which the main character learns that unwanted children in his isolated society are disposed of in the most horrific manner.
The Atonement Child by Francine Rivers
This 1999 book follows college student Dynah, who becomes pregnant following a sexual assault. Her faith is put to the test as she considers ending the life growing inside of her, but tiny moments make her wonder if she should embrace life.
Prophet by Frank Peretti
After his fanatical Christian father dies, news anchor John Barrett and his estranged son begin to have strange visions. What is worse, his father’s death may have been caused by a pro-abortion political candidate who is hiding a dark secret about his deceased daughter. How does his father’s activism, the visions, and an abortion scandal connect? You find out in this 1992 novel.
There are many other pro-life fictional works worth reading, but these five stand out for their boldness in dealing with the horrifying reality of abortion while displaying the culture of life for their readers.
