A group of indie rock bands have joined together to create a rock album which will donate the proceeds to abortion groups.
Noise for Now issued a press release announcing its first album, allowing “artists and entertainers to connect with and financially support grassroots organizations that work in the field of Reproductive Justice, including abortion access.” There are numerous musicians signed on to participate, including Pearl Jam, KT Tunstall, Ani DiFranco, R.E.M., Tori Amos, Melissa Etheridge, Fiona Apple, Nine Inch Nails, and more.
The first album contains artists such as Tegan and Sara, a duo whose music frequently appears on the ABC show “Grey’s Anatomy;” Maya Hawke, the daughter of actors Ethan Hawke and Uma Thurman; and Amanda Shires. Shires appears on the album with her husband, Jason Isbell, with their song “The Problem,” which features a couple discussing an abortion. The proceeds from that song went to the Yellowhammer Fund, an Alabama abortion organization, and it was originally released on International Safe Abortion Day.
“Reproductive health care services, including access to legal abortion, are under attack,” the press release said. “By organizing benefit events and campaigns, NOISE FOR NOW provides opportunities for artists and entertainers to use their talent to raise money and send a clear message that Reproductive Rights are human rights.”
But suctioning, dismembering, or poisoning a human being in the womb (as seen in the video below) cannot reasonably be considered a “human right.” The first human right – life – is denied to those individuals, who have no voice or choice in the matter:
The album will raise money for numerous abortion organizations, including the Center for Reproductive Rights, multiple Planned Parenthood affiliates, Jane’s Due Process, and more.
“The choice to decide what happens to our bodies is under attack and access to crucial services are being decimated and criminalized,” one of the participating groups, Tegan and Sara, said in a statement. “Reproductive justice and access to safe abortion is a human rights issue and we are proud to support the organizations and individuals fighting for fundamental services and care against all odds.”
This is not fundamental care:
Yet calling abortion a “human rights issue” while defending the taking of human life is an inherent contradiction. Preborn children are human beings — this is a scientific fact, not a randomly-held belief — and intentionally taking a life is not, and never can be, a human right. Women, and their children, deserve better than abortion.
