Vice President Kamala Harris raised eyebrows earlier this week when she claimed that keeping abortion legal is important — for children.
Harris has been traveling throughout the country to speak in favor of abortion, calling it “one of the most critical issues facing our country.” On Monday, she spoke in Indianapolis after lawmakers there called a special session to consider a bill that would restrict abortion. During her speech, she mentioned, “what this issue means to real people, including children.”

Like many other abortion advocates, Harris has used the horrifying rape of a 10-year-old girl in Ohio as justification that abortion needs to remain legal in the United States. But while many have used this tragedy as a rallying cry in the wake of the Supreme Court’s reversal of Roe v. Wade, few people are talking about what really needs to be done: protecting children from pedophiles. Abortion is a violent act and carries significant risks and consequences, even for rape survivors. Instead of championing abortion for young girls who have suffered unspeakable crimes, abortion activists should focus on protecting children from predators.
Harris’s claim that children need abortion is also ironic, considering that abortion has killed over 63 million children before birth in the United States.

When abortion was legalized with the ruling of Roe v. Wade in 1973, one of the abortion industry’s most common lies was that the child inside the womb was nothing more than a clump of cells. But since that time nearly 50 years ago, science has advanced tremendously — and with those advancements has come an incredible understanding of the intricacy and beauty of life inside the womb.
As Live Action’s “Baby Olivia” demonstrates — with statistics backed by the Endowment for Human Development — the preborn child is clearly human. Her heart beats just 22 days after fertilization. She can suck her thumb at nine weeks, make complex facial expressions at 11 weeks, and respond to noises in the outside world at 20 weeks. While she is tucked out of sight, safely in her mother’s womb, there is no denying that she is a living, growing child.
Sadly, Harris and other abortion advocates often use crimes against children to justify saving the very act (abortion) that is killing so many younger, even more defenseless children. Abortion is the intentional homicide of an undelivered child, and it also comes with serious risks to the mother. Children don’t need abortion — they need to be protected from this heinous evil that is tragically killing thousands of them every day.
