Second-trimester abortion facility to remain open following abortionist’s death

Abortionist LeRoy Carhart

Late-term abortionist LeRoy Carhart died last week. And though he had several abortion facilities across the country, his facility in Bellevue, Nebraska will stay open, according to his daughter.

Carhart’s Bellevue facility was being investigated by the Nebraska Department of Health and Human Services, due to a severely botched abortion. A 35-year-old woman allegedly suffered internal hemorrhaging, coded at least once, and required surgery to save her life. These life-saving efforts were said to be necessary because the staff at Carhart’s facility “let her lie there too long” before finally calling 911. The complainant, whose identity has not been revealed, asked for an investigation into patient care violations at the facility.

Before his death, Carhart was the medical director of Clinics for Abortion and Reproductive Excellence (C.A.R.E.), with facilities in Bellevue and Bethesda, Maryland, and he was seeking a potential third location in Colorado.

Janine Weatherby, Carhart’s daughter, told WOWT that her father died of bile duct cancer. “He didn’t mind that term whatsoever,” she said of being called an abortionist. “He took pride in it. But he loved to help people. Whatever you needed, he would be there to help you. I don’t think that really matters to [his critics]. I don’t think they really think he’s human or a good person.”

She said she will keep her late father’s abortion business operating for as long as it remains legal in Nebraska. “One of his doctors that was working for us here has taken over that medical director spot, but it’s still going,” she said. “There’s enough doctors out there and people that want to help and follow in his footsteps. We’re not going anywhere.”

Carhart has a long history of injuring women, and he was one of the few abortionists in the nation who would commit late-term abortions. He was responsible for the deaths of at least two women — Christin Gilbert and Jennifer Morbelli — and injuries he caused to two other women in May 2022 were so horrific that hospital staff members were traumatized.
