On August 1, 2023, a pregnant UK woman was stabbed to death by her married boyfriend, the father of her child. Just over a year after her death, her murderer has been sentenced to a minimum of 27 years in prison for murder and “child destruction.”
The Birmingham Crown Court found Filmon Andmichaen, 31, guilty of killing Liwam Bereket, 26, and the couple’s preborn baby girl (at 27 weeks gestation). After a delayed trial, his sentence was finally handed down on November 27, 2024.
Bereket had reportedly been looking hopefully into her future as a mother, while Andmichaen had other ideas about fatherhood. Andmichaen had a wife from Uganda whom he had married just a year prior; he pressured Bereket to have an abortion to cover up the affair, but she refused.
The BBC reported, “Jurors deliberated for nearly three and a half hours before returning unanimous guilty verdicts. This was Andmichaen’s second trial after the first collapsed in March due to issues over the child destruction charge.”
According to The Pinnacle Gazette, her friends and family said she was a “beautiful soul” and that she saw her preborn baby as “wholly precious.” Witnesses stated that Andmichaen was aggressive and abusive to Bereket, and noted they had seen him punch her in the face weeks before he stabbed her to death.
On the day of the murder, Andmichaen reportedly led Bereket to a secluded, wooded area and fatally stabbed her in the neck, and then let her bleed to death; jurors were told she showed signs of life for up to two hours after. Thinking ahead to prevent any calls for help, Andmichaen had confiscated Bereket’s phone and wallet and tried to hide them in his car.
He also hid the murder weapon, which investigators have yet to recover.
Andmichaen’s brother happened upon him shortly after the crime and was concerned when he noticed his brother’s clothes were wet. He encouraged Andmichaen to call the police “if he had committed a crime.” Although he did call the police over an hour after his crime, Andmichaen claimed he had accidentally killed his girlfriend and then supposedly attempted suicide.
Sadly, due to Andmichaen deception about the seriousness of Bereket’s condition, medical personnel arrived too late to save either victim, despite an attempt at an emergency c-section.
According to Dudley News, Prosecutor Sandip Patel summarized to the jury, “Filmon Andmichaen made a chilling decision; he decided the life growing inside his girlfriend was a complication he was unwilling to accept.”
Judge Choudhury told Andmichaen, “Her attempts to get you [defendant] to assume responsibility for the child caused you to lash out in frustration.”
Bereket’s family and friends are devastated to lose not only their daughter but a grandchild, stating, “She was not just a daughter and sister; she was a beautiful soul full of life, laughter, and love. She brought joy to everyone around her and was kind-hearted and compassionate… Remember her not just as a victim but as a person who loved and was loved.”
Violence like what Bereket and her preborn baby endured is the result of a societal attitude that sees preborn children as unwanted consequences of sex, and women as objects to be used. The pro-abortion lie, “my body, my choice,” certainly did not ring true for Bereket or the growing number of women like her. She and her baby were given no choice to live at all.
