University of Michigan football coach Jim Harbaugh recently gave a podcast interview to National Review’s senior editor, Jay Nordlinger, in which Harbaugh discussed several topics, from coaching football to the coronavirus. But it’s Harbaugh’s comments about abortion that caused many to take notice.
Harbaugh did not shy away from discussing his personal faith in God. According to the Detroit Free Press, Harbaugh said, “Even now, as we all go through what we’re going through with COVID-19, I see people more concerned about others. More prayerful. As I said, God has virtually stopped the world from spinning. I don’t think it’s coincidence — my personal feeling, living a faith-based life, this is a message or this is something that should be a time where we grow on our faith for reverence and respect for God.”
Harbaugh’s remarks also reflect the understanding that when people have a reverence and love for God, that should naturally extend to his or her fellow man, who are made in God’s image. “You see people taking more of a view of sanctity of life. And I hope that can continue,” said Harbaugh. “I hope that continues and not just in this time of crisis or pandemic.”
“And lastly, abortion,” he continued. “We talk about sanctity of life, yet we live in a society that aborts babies. There can’t be anything more horrendous.”
While Harbaugh’s comments will no doubt draw the ire of those in society who support abortion, he’s right — abortion is horrendous. Those who see it — or even a graphic representation of it — tend to realize how inhumane and awful it truly is. Live Action’s own man-on-the-street interviews have shown that when the public sees abortion — even if they support the idea of legal abortion — they find it to be a truly brutal act. Just seeing what happens in an abortion can change minds:
Abortion is not just a “medical procedure,” nor is it “health care,” as many claim. The reason for this is because abortion deliberately takes the life of a developing human being — and health care that purposely kills isn’t health care at all.
