I’ve been a part of some pretty incredible experiences in my life, but I’ve never been a part of something so surreal, so life affirming and so insanely beautiful as watching my son come into this world… It was this watershed moment where I knew that everything I valued before seems finite and temporary.
These were the words of Eric Christian Olsen, who plays Detective Deeks on the popular NCIS TV series. Olsen’s wife, Sarah Wright, gave birth to the couple’s first son, Wyatt, on August 16th.
Olsen joins a slew of famous men and women who recognize just how amazing a new child is.
In Prince William’s first interview after the birth of his son, he told CNN’s Max Foster:
I think the last few weeks for me have been just a very different emotional experience. Something I never thought I would feel myself. And I find, again it’s only been a short period, but a lot of things affect me differently now.
Beyonce Knowles discussed both her miscarriage and her pregnancy with her daughter, Blue Ivy:
“About two years ago, I was pregnant for the first time,” Knowles reveals in an emotional scene. “I heard the heartbeat, which was the most beautiful music I ever heard in my life.” … [Emphasis mine.]
“[After the miscarriage] I went into the studio and wrote the saddest song I’ve ever written in my life. It was actually the first song I wrote for my album,” the 31-year-old singer says about the heartbreak. “It was the best form of therapy for me, because it was the saddest thing I’ve ever been through.” …
“Being pregnant was very much like falling in love,” Knowles says. “You are so open. You are so overjoyed. There’s no words that can express having a baby growing inside of you, so of course you want to scream it out and tell everyone.”
Last year, Ben Affleck’s wife, Jennifer Garner, gave birth to their third child – a son named Samuel. Affleck went on to say that his kids are the “best part” of his life:
They’re sweet. It’s great. Raising kids is the greatest thing I think a person, or at least I, could ever do in my life. I know what the best part of my life is and it’s my kids and it doesn’t mean there aren’t other things that aren’t great, but I know sort of what the centre is.
It’s great that so many stars are realizing how amazing children are – especially considering how many people tune in to what a star has to say. What we need more of, though, is stars who realize that the children they’re commenting on were the exact same children before birth. Birth changes nothing when it comes to the value or existence of a human being.
From the moment a child is conceived, a unique, new human life comes into existence. As the Report of the South Dakota Task Force to Study Abortion found:
There can no longer be any doubt that each human being is totally unique from the very beginning of his or her life at fertilization. (Mark, P. 19-21.)
…[T]he human being is whole and complete at fertilization.
…[I]t is a scientific fact that an abortion at any age of gestation terminates the life of a living human being.
Every single child is just as beautiful, incredible, and worthy of love as Olsen’s, Prince William’s, and Affleck’s children. If only more parents would realize exactly what they’re missing out on by choosing to snuff out the lives of their own precious children…
