New Alabama rule would reduce abortions

Alabama health officials proposed new rules Wednesday that would reduce the number of abortions a doctor could perform before his or her practice would be regulated as an abortion facility.

Currently in Alabama, a doctor’s office can perform 30 abortions per month without being licensed as an abortion provider.  The proposed rules would define an abortion clinic as any facility that performs 10 or more abortions in any single month and 100 or more in a year, thus reducing the number of abortions that be performed without a license.

Disgraced abortionist Bruce Norman of now-closed New Woman All Women, a Birmingham abortion center infamous for its 76-page deficiency report and numerous botched abortions, has used Alabama’s law to attempt to continue performing abortions.

Norman’s attorney has already criticized the proposed rules, noting:

“It’s almost making it impossible for Dr. Norman to keep going.”

The proposal will be considered during a public hearing October 24.  Pro-lifers in Alabama, led by the Charismatic Episcopal Church, have already begun a letter-writing campaign in support of the proposed rules.
