New York is continuing on its mission to make itself a “safe harbor” for abortion — and in New York City, that includes using search engine optimization to lure abortion-seeking women to come from around the country.
A press release from Mayor Eric Adams revealed that the city will launch a marketing effort to increase search engine visibility to ensure women looking for abortions travel to New York City to get them.
“Abortion care is health care, and we are proud that, because of our administration’s efforts, women can be confident that their reproductive rights are protected in the five boroughs,” Adams said. “Over two years ago, the Supreme Court may have taken action that limited access to abortions across the nation, but, here in New York, on what would have been the 52nd anniversary of Roe v. Wade, we are ensuring that no matter your zip code, race, or economic status, you can safely access reproductive care.”
“Thanks to our Abortion Access Hub, in just over two years, more than 8,500 women have been able to connect to licensed abortion care providers in our city and ensure they retain control of their bodies, their choices, and their freedoms,” he added. The announcement was made on what would have been the 52nd anniversary of Roe v. Wade.
For nearly two decades, Black abortions outnumbered Black births in New York City; this began to change in 2017. Now, eight years later, with new efforts and incentives promoting abortion, NYC could see a tragic reversal of this.
New York City’s hotline is in line with statewide policies, looking to ensure that abortion is as widely available as possible. The state of New York launched both a legal hotline and a website promoting abortion; the city’s hotline will tell women how “far along your pregnancy is, what type of abortion service you prefer, what borough you would like services in, and when.”
Over 40 sites are linked to the hotline, including, according to the press release, “NYC Health + Hospitals locations, Department of Health sexual health clinics, private hospitals, independent abortion providers and telehealth-only sites.” The hotline will also help arrange funding, transportation, and lodging for women who travel to New York to get abortions.
It has become beyond clear that both New York City and New York State are incredibly invested in promoting abortion at all costs.
