According to Planned Parenthood’s 2018-2019 annual report, adoption referrals at the organization are up an astounding 51 percent (51.15%), rising from 2,831 in 2017 to 4,279 in 2018. While this number gives the appearance that Planned Parenthood refers pregnant patients to adoption agencies, there is much more to this questionable story.
It’s important to note that Planned Parenthood does not share what constitutes an “adoption referral” at their facilities. Keeping that information private means that “adoption referral” could really mean that the counselor simply mentioned the word adoption. However, in 2017, former Planned Parenthood manager Sue Thayer revealed to Live Action’s President Lila Rose how the abortion corporation defined “adoption referral” during her tenure as an employee. According to Thayer, it’s all for show.

Despite the fact that there are abortion quotas at Planned Parenthood, Thayer said there is no such thing as adoption quotas. However, she revealed that Planned Parenthood had partnered with a pro-choice leaning adoption agency just so it could use that connection in public relations to say they offer adoption referrals.

“If anybody even took information on adoption, we would check that box and that would count as an adoption referral, but in all those years – almost 18 years – that I worked there I never knew one client that chose adoption,” Thayer told Rose.
“The connection was really formed just for the purpose of being able to say to our donors that we partnered with an adoption agency. And even people who are pro-choice seem to want to hear, ‘Well, ya know, Planned Parenthood is about choice. They have the choice of adoption.’ Even though once the partnership was made I never – in all the connections I had with all the 17 centers in Iowa – heard anyone say that they had a client go and meet with the people from the adoption agency,” she told Rose.
Thayer stated that anytime a patient physically took a brochure for the adoption agency, Planned Parenthood staff would mark the box for adoption referral. So even if zero babies were placed for adoption through the corporation’s phony partnership with the adoption agency, they would include the patient’s acceptance of the brochure in the annual report as an adoption referral. However, according to Thayer, the chances that the women who took the brochures actually met with an adoption counselor were practically non-existent.
“By the time they get to Planned Parenthood, they have a really high chance of having an abortion, because it’s pretty much – it’s what – it’s what we did there,” said Thayer. “To get them an abortion at a Planned Parenthood facility was really our goal.”
