Planned Parenthood of Birmingham at center of medical malpractice suit

The same negligence that led to the death of Tonya Reaves.

The only remaining abortion clinic in Birmingham, Alabama faces a new legal battle. According to a press release on Christian News Wire from the Life Legal Defense Foundation, Dr. Qua Don E. Umoren and the Planned Parenthood clinic in Birmingham are facing claims of medical malpractice in civil court. Dr. Umoren is accused of performing a botched abortion on Roberta Clark, who has filed the suit. Ms. Clark’s ectopic pregnancy nearly killed her after a botched abortion by Umoren and his staff. Planned Parenthood’s records show a completed abortion, but over a month later it was discovered that the child was un-aborted and lodged in Ms. Clark’s fallopian tube.

Planned Parenthood in Birmingham was on a year-long probation by the state health department after an investigation by Live Action President Lila Rose found that the clinic was performing illegal abortions for minors and covering up statutory rape cases, according to a press release by CEC for Life. The incident involving Ms. Clark occurred during the year-long probation.

In her lawsuit, Ms. Clark claims that Planned Parenthood of Birmingham practices the same lack of care that resulted in the July 2012 death of Tonya Reaves at a Chicago Planned Parenthood clinic. The lawsuit claims a failure to diagnose Ms. Clark’s ectopic pregnancy, negligent care, and a “failure to hire trained and licensed employees.” You can read more details of the botched abortion on Ms. Clark in CEC for Life’s press release.

Fr. Terry Gensemer of CEC for Life stated, “No one should be surprised by Planned Parenthood’s atrocious behavior. The abortion industry in Birmingham has absolutely no regard for the law or lives of the women they claim to help. Just as the Department of Public Health shut down the shoddy practices of the New Woman clinic last may, we ask that they also shut down Planned Parenthood for such practiced carelessness with women’s lives.” CEC for Life, Alabama Physicians for Life, Life Legal Defense Foundation, Live Action, and Pro-Life Nation will call for the immediate shutdown of the Planned Parenthood of Birmingham Clinic on Wednesday at 10 AM at a press conference across from the clinic.

Dana Cody, executive director of the Life Legal Defense Foundation, noted, “Every time a women is injured or abused by their abortion providers and their wanton disregard for human life, we will be there to fight the legal battle on all fronts.”
