Report: Planned Parenthood outspends all other abortion-related groups on lobbying

Last year, Planned Parenthood announced its plan for a nationwide strategy to promote abortion in the wake of Roe v. Wade’s reversal. The corporation followed up with that quickly, spending more in the second quarter of 2022 than in the organization’s entire history. Now, more data has been released showing that Planned Parenthood is still spending drastic amounts of money — more, in fact, than any other abortion-related group in the country.

OpenSecrets reported that Planned Parenthood spent $714,000 in federal lobbying in the first half of 2023 alone, a massive amount compared to other groups. NARAL Pro-Choice America has spent just $30,000 in the same period of time in federal lobbying.

On the pro-life side, Right to Life spent $160,000, and Susan B. Anthony List spent $590,000 — still considerably less than Planned Parenthood’s spending.

Planned Parenthood also had specific goals for that money, according to OpenSecrets. It worked to pass the Affordability is Access Act, the Women’s Health Protection Act, and the Equal Access to Abortion Coverage Act — and also spent funds to keep the Born-Alive Abortion Survivors Protection Act (which would require medical care and protections for children who survive abortions) from passing.

Additionally, Planned Parenthood has more lobbyists working for them than any other group — even as the number of lobbyists they have working for them decreases.

“The group had 17 lobbyists representing them in 2022. So far this year, they have 16. The number of lobbyists representing Planned Parenthood has been gradually declining each year since a massive spike in the number of federal lobbyists hired by the group in 2021 — jumping from 10 lobbyists in 2020 to 18 lobbyists in 2021, an all-time high for the group,” Open Secrets explained.

“Planned Parenthood still has more lobbyists than any other abortion rights and anti-abortion rights groups. NARAL Pro-Choice had a slight decline in lobbyists this year, dropping from five lobbyists to three. Meanwhile, anti-abortion rights groups’ lobbyist representation has remained consistent from 2022 into 2023, with National Right to Life reporting three lobbyists in 2022 and 2023 and Susan B. Anthony List reporting six lobbyists for both years.”

Throughout all of this voracious lobbying and spending, Planned Parenthood’s annual report showed that their taxpayer funding is the highest it’s ever been. The nation’s leading abortion corporation now takes in $1.8 million taxpayer dollars every day, an increase of 6% from the previous year, which equals more than a third of its revenue. Though the organization’s abortions slightly fell in its most recent report, they still committed 374,155 abortions — equating to just over 40% of all abortions in the United States.
