Police searching for mother of newborn found dead inside a bag in Detroit

A deceased newborn baby was found inside a bloody bag in Lincoln Park in Detroit, Michigan, last weekend. Police are searching for the mother.

According to local news reports, police said a Lincoln Park resident saw the bag in a wooded area near For and St. Johns streets that had a large amount of blood on it. Police officers were called to the scene and when they opened the bag, they discovered the body of a newborn baby. They believe the baby was born just before being put in the bag, but do not know when the child was born.

“The Wright & Filippis Lincoln Park staff and I are devastated and saddened by the news and loss of an innocent child’s life,” said Steven Filippis, co-owner of a business near where the baby was found. “We are doing everything we can to help police and local authorities investigate this situation. The W&F office was closed over the weekend when the authorities believe the incident occurred. Our thoughts and prayers are with the community as we work through this tragedy together.”

Lincoln Park Mayor Thomas Karnes called it a “tragic event.”

A resident who lives nearby said that when she heard them say it was a baby, she “lost it,” adding “If you didn’t want the baby, you could have brought it to my front door. I would have took it, gladly.”

The tragic death of this newborn highlights exactly what is wrong with abortion. At any point during pregnancy, abortion is legal, according to U.S. law (some states have no restrictions). In Michigan, a preborn child can be killed right up until birth if the mother’s life is endangered, though a preterm delivery is safer and faster than taking the time to purposefully kill the child in an abortion before delivery. An emergency C-section takes minutes and can save both the mother and child, while a late-term abortion takes days and includes the intentional and unnecessary killing of the child.

The citizens of Lincoln Park are holding a candlelight vigil, “Justice for baby John Doe,” on March 10 in recognition of the fact that the baby’s chance at life was taken away from him. Yet every day in the U.S., more than 2,000 innocent children are tossed into medical waste bins, flushed down toilets, and thrown in dumpsters by the abortion industry — each of them robbed of their chance at life.

In addition, every state has a Safe Haven Law to protect babies from being discarded as this child was. Michigan allows parents to surrender a newborn no more than 72 hours old to an emergency medical service provider, no questions asked. Safe Haven Laws have saved thousands of lives.

The death of a child is always a tragedy — whether inside the womb or out.
