‘Death trap’: Pregnant patients give horrific Google Reviews of hospital where Amber Thurman died

Last week, news broke that Georgia woman Amber Thurman had died after taking the abortion pill, suffering sepsis (a known but rare risk of the abortion pill), and visiting a hospital at which doctors allegedly failed to act quickly to carry out the D&C procedure that might have saved her life.

Negative Google reviews show that Thurman is not the only patient to have suffered what might amount to medical negligence at Piedmont Henry Hospital in Stockbridge, Georgia.

‘Passed my baby alone in the restroom’

A Google Review from a woman named Kaycie stated last week:

A little over a week ago my husband took me to the ER for a miscarriage. When we got there I was very unsteady and had left a trail of blood from the car to the front desk. I had to stand at the check in desk for 5 minutes answering questions on the verge of passing out while the nurse behind the counter complained to me about how bad her knee hurt. […]

30-45 minutes go by of me actively bleeding and multiple other ER patients checking on me in the restroom, passing my baby alone in the restroom, then the nurse with the injured knee comes in and hands me a cup and tells me to put my baby in the cup if I felt like I was having it. I was too weak at this point to really talk or do anything and she left.

About 5 minutes later she came back with a wheel chair and realized how compromised I was and took me to the back. Once I was in a room they hooked me up to a bp cuff wrong which gave them a normal-ish bp reading, a couple minutes later they were trying to place an IV and I told the nurse I was lightheaded and passed out. While I was passed out I had a seizure like reaction and the ER doctor and both nurses froze according to my husband. They replaced my bp cuff and my bp was 80/40 and they put 2 more iv catheters in and gave me fluids to raise it.

After a while I regained consciousness […] On top of it all my husband and I were never told that I was septic, just that I had an infection, and severe sepsis was the primary diagnosis on my discharge paperwork.

‘If you are pregnant, stay away from this hospital’

“Worst experience ever!” wrote Destiny in July. She added:

I’m currently 34 weeks pregnant and was having complications. […] if you are pregnant, stay away from this hospital. The nursing staff was the worst group of people I ever met. […] PIEDMONT, my gosh. THEY SHOULD BE SHUT DOWN.

They watched me struggle to the bathroom with active contractions and made rude remarks and had terrible attitudes. They weren’t in a rush to run any tests. It is inhumane to treat a pregnant person the way they treated me…

I discharged myself and was able to get proper care with Emory. Me and baby are doing better in spite of yesterday’s complications and to no help and no credit to Piedmont Henry Hospital.

’13 weeks pregnant and no one cared’

Just last week, Madison wrote:

I have been here for 7 hours throwing up blood 13 weeks pregnant and NO ONE has cared to do anything but draw my blood and give me a sticker with my name on it.

The staff here is rude and inconsiderate to people’s needs.

This place needs to be managed better or shut down this is horrible, people are screaming at workers stating the staff doesn’t care about [their] patients because they DO NOT.

‘Pregnant, cramping, and on a stretcher in the hall’

Six months ago, Tekesha wrote:

I wish I could’ve gave zero stars.

I was brought in to the ER by the ambulance because I’m pregnant and I was having brown discharge and cramping. They had me laying in the hallway on a stretcher while in pain thinking that I was going to get a room and someone was going to check me, while I’m laying there, I’m listening to all kind of ghetto stupid conversations from employees and paramedics. […]

Me, my husband and my aunt waited for hours they did not treat me as if this was an emergency. My husband and my aunt had to ask them, were they Going to get a urine sample and do an ultrasound because no one said anything to us at all. I got the ultrasound finally gave a urine sample and after hours of waiting Someone came and got me and my husband and told us that the doctor was going to come into the room and examine me however I finally saw this rude male doctor, Who came in like he was so confused, Did not examine me considering I was having discharge and in pain he stated that on my ultrasound they saw the yolk sack and the fetal pole, but because there was no heartbeat, and I was supposed to be eight weeks, considered a threaten[ed] miscarriage.

My husband and I had a serious issue with his delivery and how nonchalant he was and no one ever examine me To make sure I was OK , Luckily, my first OB/GYN appointment was the same week and I was able to go in and talk to them which was way more pleasant.

I pray to god I never have to go to their ER ever again in life. Some of the staff are nasty, racist, and extremely unprofessional.

‘Get your labor and delivery nurses together’

Another reviewer, Jerry, wrote eight months ago, “I was in labor and they […] took their sweet times getting me to a room. […] when they realized how dilated I was they wanted to try to hurry up then, but why not hurry up because I’m telling you I know my body?? Y’all please get your labor and delivery nurses together.”

Additional reviews

Some additional reviews blame Piedmont Henry staff for the suffering — and, in some cases, even the deaths — of patients who allegedly did not receive adequate and appropriate care.

“Thanks to them my grandmother died due to the nurses and doctors in the ICU that didn’t give her the proper care she needed,” wrote Jiharia two months ago.

Also in July, Michelle wrote that her fiancé was killed by “negligent” staff:

Do not take your loved ones to piedmont henry.

My Fiancee was admitted for low blood pressure possibly caused by pneumonia. By day 3 medication they administered caused temporary kidney failure. […] On day 6 he was on a ventilator. […] Dr.s were contradicing about his medications. […]

My Fiancee was drowning in fluids of medication that on day 4 I told piedmont staff he was unable to release. Dr said the fluids are saving his life so they continued to administer about 6 different medications until his lungs were in a stage of collapse by day 6/7.

On day 8 he passed away. While still full of fluid a nurse turned him on his side & he went into shock & died. Hospital ruled the cause of death as “Shock”.

I call his hospital stay a tragic ordeal & piedmont staff negligent.

Jasmine wrote about major time delays and potential negligence when her mother, who had suffered cardiac arrest, was brought in by EMS:

My mother was brought to this hospital by EMS after a cardiac arrest and 15 minutes of CPR preformed. All of my mother’s initial test pointed to a heart attack. However, this hospital set my mother in an ER room for 10hrs after suffering a major cardiac arrest on nasal cannula. Two hours later my mother went into respiratory failure and was placed on life support and wrist restraints.

My mother didn’t get to ICU until 11pm that night. They didn’t start giving her any medications for her heart until 24hrs later. We were told my mother went too long without oxygen and will never be the same.

This hospital has pushed my siblings and I to withdraw care for my 49 year old mother since the day she arrived. They refuse to help her because they say there is little chance of recovery.

I am 100% sure my mother is in this condition because she was brought in by police and she had no insurance. It is clear there were no efforts to save my mother’s life upon arrival to the ER.

I will not sleep until this hospital pays for what they did or didn’t do for my mother!!!!!!! This hospital is a death trap!!

Urge Walmart, Costco, Kroger, and other major chains to resist pressure to dispense the abortion pill
