During a recent television interview, Malta president Myriam Spiteri Debono, who says she is personally opposed to abortion, said that she thinks it is “inevitable” that abortion will be introduced and legalized in the pro-life nation.
“I think it is inevitable,” she said. “If we study the developments even in other countries, they began with 100% being against it. The important thing is that it does not enter the country by just slipping through by stealth. It’s the same with euthanasia. The most important thing that is discussed, and on euthanasia it seems a profound discussion is about to start.”
She continued, “When it comes to abortion there is another thing. As far as I know it is only us and the Philippines which do not have it. But euthanasia, no. Euthanasia is not that widely accepted. We have to proceed slowly but it is important that ultimately we have a clear direction from the people, what they want as a nation and I believe that the best tool is a referendum, and nothing else.”
Abortion was completely illegal in Malta until 2023 when it became legal to commit induced abortion — the direct and intentional killing of preborn children — when the mother’s life is considered to be at risk.
This is not the first time Spiteri Debono has made such remarks. In April 2024, the newly sworn-in president told radio host Andrew Azzopardi that the decision on whether or not to legalize abortion should be made through a referendum.
“Regardless of whether it will happen 8, 10, or 20 years from now, yes I believe that abortion will eventually be introduced,” she said at the time.
A 2008 letter to Socialist International Women signed by Spiteri Debono, who was then the leader of the Labor Party’s organization Ghaqda Nisa Laburisti (later changed to Nisa Laburisti), stated that the “organisation is totally against abortion.”
“Our organisation is totally against abortion, and the right of the unborn to life is viewed by us as the very first human right,” the letter read, “and therefore we can never in any way go against this precept or be seen in any way directly or indirectly to aid or abet anything leading to the perpetration of abortion.”
