The pro-abortion political action committee EMILY’s List has announced it is prepared to spend “tens of millions of dollars” to bolster the campaign of vice-president Kamala Harris during the 2024 election. According to POLITICO, this type of effort to boost the status of a sitting vice president is unprecedented.
“We’re going to tell the story about who she is, what she’s done, support her at every turn and really push back against the massive misinformation and disinformation that’s been directed towards her since she’s been elected,” said Laphonza Butler, the president of EMILY’s List. Butler confirmed that the group would be directing some of the spending in reaching different demographics among various social media platforms. “Some age groups and demographics get their information from things like YouTube or from TikTok. For some demographics, they are much more interpersonal and in terms of how they get and disseminate information,” she said.
In her role as vice president, Harris has been outspoken in her support for abortion, making the issue one of her top priorities. In April, she claimed that those who fight to save preborn children are “attacking America.” In March, she called pro-life laws “inhumane” and last fall, she went so far as to tell Christians that they should be accepting of abortion. She has also invited abortionists to the White House and encouraged Senators to vote to make abortion a federal right.
As an organization, EMILY’s List is dedicated to electing “women who will protect the right to choose at every level of government, all across the country.” This is not the first time they have supported Harris; during the 2020 election, the group also spent about $10 million in support of the Biden campaign after it was announced that Harris would be running as VP. At that time, they also established a Twitter account called Madam Vice President that called itself “A project of EMILY’s List with the goal of electing Kamala Harris as the first woman vice president of the United States.”
