Last month, Live Action brought you a story about the great work the Texas Aggies are doing to help pregnant and parenting students on campus. In an effort to help parenting students who desire to complete their education, the Pro-Life Aggies of Texas A&M University have started a scholarship fund that awards one to two scholarships to parenting students every semester. In order to fund the scholarship, the Aggies host an annual 5k Fun Run, and 100% of the proceeds go directly towards assisting A&M’s pregnant and parenting students.
The second annual 5k this year took place on Saturday, March 2. It was a very chilly, very windy day in College Station as dedicated walkers and runners gathered on campus for the event. Most of them had registered online, using the efficient system that the Aggies have developed over the last few years, and others signed up when they arrived. They checked in, received their awesome t-shirts, and were given their number to pin on to their shirt.
The skill level and seriousness of the runners ranged. Some of the runners were determined to make the run their personal best time, while others – in genuine Texas fashion – took their sweet time strolling towards the finish line. Regardless of their athletic aptitude, all of the participants shared a love for life that was truly inspiring to watch. Compared to similar running events in the area, the Aggies are happy to report that their fun run has been very successful, considering that it has been in existence for only two years.
After achieving the 3.1-mile trek, runners were greeted with applause and a Texas-style lunch, generously provided by the local Knights of Columbus from St. Mary’s. (We know from accounts like this one that the Knights of Columbus are a solid and indispensable presence in the pro-life movement.)
Thanks to the 5k’s success, the Pro-Life Aggies were able to award a scholarship after the run to a young woman named Yvette, a senior English major working towards a career in event planning. Past scholarship recipients were also present to share their stories of how the scholarship assisted them in achieving their academic goals as parents.
