Passionately pro-life congresswoman Mia Love dies at 49 following cancer battle

Mia Love, the first Black Republican woman elected to the United States House of Representatives, has died at the age of 49 following a battle with cancer.

Her family shared the tragic news on social media:

With grateful hearts filled to overflowing for the profound influence of Mia on our lives, we want you to know that she passed away peacefully today. She was in her home surrounded by family.

In the midst of a celebration of her life and an avalanche of happy memories, Mia quietly slipped the bands of mortality and, as her words and vision always did, soared heavenward.

We are thankful for the many good wishes, prayers and condolences. We are taking some time as a family and will provide information about funeral services and a public celebration of her life in the days to come.

Love had previously served as mayor of Saratoga Springs in her home state of Utah, before representing Utah’s 4th district in the U.S. House from 2015 to 2019. Love was openly pro-life, speaking in favor of legislation protecting preborn children from abortion, and of defunding Planned Parenthood, and spoke at the 2017 March for Life. On her original campaign site (now archived), she also made it clear that she was dedicated to protecting life:

I am proud to say that I am pro-life. My commitment to pro-life policies is unwavering, and I look forward to working with others in Congress to protect the right to life. I have received endorsements from multiple pro-life organizations, including the National Right to Life Committee (NRLC), the nation’s oldest and largest pro-life organization.

Love was diagnosed in 2022 with glioblastoma, a brain cancer, and was given less than two years to live. Surgery was able to remove the majority of the tumor, and she enrolled in a immunotherapy clinical trial in 2023. Earlier this month, however, her daughter announced that the treatments were not working, and they were focusing on palliative care to ensure her final days were as peaceful and comfortable as possible. She died on March 23, 2025.

Live Action founder and president Lila Rose responded to Love’s death on X, writing, “Mia was a bright light in politics and a passionate pro-life advocate. She was also a woman of faith. Rest in peace, Mia.”

In her final op-ed, shortly before dying, Love wrote that she knew her death was imminent, and shared her dreams for the United States.

“In the end, I hope that my life will have mattered and made a difference for the nation I love and the family and friends I adore. I hope you will see the America I know in the years ahead, that you will hear my words in the whisper of the wind of freedom and feel my presence in the flame of the enduring principles of liberty,” she wrote.

“My living wish and fervent prayer for you and for this nation is that the America I have known, is the America you fight to preserve and that each citizen, and every leader, will do their part to ensure that the America we know will be the America our grandchildren and great grandchildren will inherit.”

Love was the daughter of Haitian immigrants. She is survived by her husband, Jason, and their three children.
