Spanish actress discusses granddaughter born via surrogate using deceased son’s sperm

Two years ago, Spanish actress Ana Obregón stunned the world when she announced that her newly-adopted baby was created using the sperm of her dead son and born to a surrogate. Now, she is speaking to media about her experience in raising the little girl, who is her biological granddaughter.

“I was dead for three years from Aless’ death until Anita was born,” she told Spanish TV. “You don’t accept or get over the death of a child. You end up accepting that you’ll never be able to come to terms with their departure. Fortunately, Anita now fills my days.”

Obregón said her granddaughter gives her a reason to live each day. “My house is now full of stuffed animals and toys. I even have a little ball pool where she makes me dive in,” she said, reflecting on the birth to commemorate her granddaughter’s second birthday. She has stated that without the birth of this little girl, she would not be alive today.

Though every child is a blessing, it is not the role of a child to make an adult’s life more fulfilling, or to soothe another person’s grief. A child is not an object, but a human being whose rights should be respected. Obregón did not acknowledge that she intentionally deprived the little girl of both of her parents — her father, who died before her conception, and her biological mother, whom she will never know.

In 2023, after the birth of the baby girl, she told celebrity magazine ¡Hola! that she chose to pursue surrogacy the day her only son, Alejandro Alfonso “Aless” Lequio, died in 2020:

The decision to start the surrogate pregnancy process, which implies, as you know, the participation of an egg donor and a surrogate mother, was made the day my child went to heaven. The same day. What people don’t know is that this was Aless’s last will: to bring his son into the world.

… It has been very difficult. The pregnancy did not occur on the first attempt, far from it; They have been several times and every time I didn’t go out I was terribly upset and started over.

It’s been a battle, a long road, but it’s what has kept me alive. It’s just that if it weren’t for this, I wouldn’t be here anymore.

Despite claiming her son made an oral request for her to create his children after he died, there was no paperwork indicating he ever wanted this, and it’s impossible to know if he consented to this scenario.

Multiple studies have found that removing a child from a birth parent, whether they are biologically related or not, can cause lifelong trauma. A baby bonds with his or her birth mother during pregnancy — hearing her voice, her heartbeat, her movements — and can even be affected by her emotions.

This little girl was created intentionally, knowing that she would never know her biological parents. This may affect her deeply one day… no matter how much she is wanted, loved, and cared for.
