Let’s think about when it’s okay to kill a baby in the womb.

Question: It’s okay to kill a baby in the womb…when?

Many people suggest that a baby is not a person yet. I would like to suggest otherwise with a few moral and logical arguments. The sum of the many well-engineered pieces of metal make up my car’s engine sitting outside. The sum of many pieces of silicon and metal parts allow electricity to flow and give you television. The sum of many cell clusters make up the baby in the womb, not to mention make up you and me. We are far more than just a cluster of cells, right? How are we humans different from the human in the womb? I have a heartbeat; the six-week-old human in the womb has a heartbeat. You and I have sight, the ability to hear, touch, taste, the ability to reason, the ability to feel emotions. That’s a real miracle, isn’t it? It’s something that goes beyond what is measurable by science – the very definition of metaphysics.

Back to the question: it’s okay to kill a baby in the womb…when? Depending on what term a baby is aborted, it does not have all five senses developed, therefore it must not be a person. Suggestion: what about many handicapped people who have lost some or all of the five senses? Are they not real people? Are they not entitled to life? In fact, a baby in the womb early on has developed sight, touch, and emotions, even. When the mother is upset, the baby is upset…

It’s okay to kill a baby in the womb…when? Until the baby can reason, it is not really human. Again, some people may never develop the ability to reason on their own; they will need intensive care for the rest of their lives. They still have a heartbeat; they can feel emotion. Do they not have a valid right to live?

It’s okay to kill a baby in the womb…when? The baby is inferior to the mother; a mother’s opinion trumps her baby’s, so she can deny him or her life if she chooses. I don’t know about you, but I have a difficult time denying a squirrel the right to life when it crosses the road in front of my car. Humans are far superior beings to squirrels, right? The real question is, do humans have the right to deny another humans life? Answer: they have no right – unless that person is guilty of murder, perhaps. What crime is the baby in the womb guilty of? Yet the aborted baby is treated as if he or she were a murderer by being murdered!

It’s okay to kill a baby in the womb…when? If people make a mistake or are victims of crime – say, rape – then the baby can be denied life. My mom and my wife were raped; they could have had babies, and if they did, then they would have a right to abort…right? But wait…two wrongs don’t make a right. Which is worse, rape or murder? How do we justify the murder of an innocent human being for the crime of another?

It’s okay to kill a baby in the womb…when? Population control is necessary because of the scarcity of food, water, land, etc. This already takes place in countries like China and India. Do the Indian and Chinese governments have the right to deny life because of a lack of resources? Does the Chinese government have the right to sanction population-control abortions? Because of China’s one-child-per-couple policy, the Chinese people value men over women, which results in 8 million female infanticide abortions every year. What will happen when America eventually becomes overpopulated? What a scary thought – that a government may deny you and me the right to life because of lack of resources or a misplaced values system that says men are more valuable than women.

What does the human race have in common? Problems. Real problems, and I am not trying to downplay them. But what problems are ever solved by committing crime? It was not a good solution to kill 6 million Jews because a government valued another race. It was not a good solution to enslave thousands of Americans because the government valued another skin color. It is not a good solution to kill millions of baby girls every year resulting from a government calling for population control. In America, ~50 million-plus male and female citizens have been killed since Roe v. Wade – and for what good reason?

Our Constitution set us up for success with the 14th Amendment: “No state shall deprive any person of life, liberty, or property, without due process of law.” What crime have these American citizens in the womb committed that they are denied life? We study history to learn from our mistakes – well, history’s mistakes are being repeated daily in America, as we’ve chosen to bypass the 14th Amendment. We have chosen to deny a human’s life before he or she is even born. How is this the mark of a progressive nation?

It’s okay to kill a baby in the womb…when? Never. With the election approaching, we Americans need to consider who among our leaders will fight for the right to live for the most vulnerable American citizens. We need to put in place leaders who value what our founding fathers penned with these immortal words: “We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable rights, that among these are life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness.” We have all been given a chance to live, and that is the solution. I hope you choose life.
