Bob Ferguson, the new governor of Washington, wasted no time in signing an executive order to expand abortion in his state, just moments after wrapping up his inaugural speech. The former attorney general-turned-governor has a long history of promoting abortion in Washington, going so far as to push the FDA to loosen its restrictions on the abortion pill, despite the known risks to women.
“Washington is not immune from this nationwide crisis and must be proactive in taking steps to preserve reproductive freedom within this state,” said Ferguson. His executive order directs Washington’s Department of Health to gather a group of medical businesses, health experts, and policymakers to find avenues for expanding abortion in the state.
The order claims that “all people deserve to make their own decisions about their pregnancies, including deciding to end a pregnancy.” It further states that “access to…pregnancy termination is of paramount importance for individual and public health.”
His executive order cites the overturning of Roe v Wade in 2022 by the Supreme Court Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization decision as the “catalyst for a nationwide reproductive care-access crisis, particularly as to abortion.”

Abortion is already legally committed on preborn children up to 24 weeks in Washington state, though babies born prematurely — as young as 21 weeks — have survived outside their mothers’ wombs with medical care. Heartbreakingly, 24 weeks is also far beyond the age many scientists believe fetuses can feel pain, a sickening and tragic aspect of allowing their violent death in the womb.
Between 13 and 24 weeks, abortions are typically committed via D&E (dilation and evacuation) procedures, meaning the abortionist dilates the mother’s cervix and then dismembers the preborn child (who is often still alive at the time) by using a Sopher clamp to tear off her arms and legs, then removing the rest of her body piece by piece, crushing the skull and removing the pieces as a final, gruesome step.
Per Gov. Ferguson, the order to convene the group tasked with expanding abortion in Washington “shall take effect immediately.”
