Woman gives birth on sidewalk in San Francisco’s ‘homeless district’

A shocking video that has gone viral shows a woman, whom the Daily Mail claims to be homeless, giving birth on a San Francisco sidewalk as passersby try to assist her and her baby.

According to reports, the birth took place on Geary Street, next to Union Square in the city’s Tenderloin District, which is known to be an area in which drug-addicted homeless individuals have taken up residence. The San Francisco Fire Department confirmed that a woman did give birth in “public view” on Thursday, but did not say if she was homeless. Reports claim she had been ‘smoking crack’ before giving birth.

In the short video, a man is crouched down next to the woman, who is laying on her side with her pants partially down, and her baby, who is lying on the sidewalk with a piece of fabric over him or her. As the woman tries to reach for her baby, the man tells her to “relax, the ambulance will get here.” At the end of the video, she is seen picking up and cradling her crying baby.

Both mother and baby were taken to a local hospital and are said to be in stable condition.

The city is facing a climbing homelessness problem as well as an increase in drug addiction and violent crime. The number of homeless people in the city in February 2022 was about 8,000, the second-highest figure recorded since 2005. Cash App founder Bob Lee was stabbed to death just this month in the city.

California Gov. Gavin Newsom is the former mayor of San Francisco and has been heavily criticized for his inability to help the homeless and the drug-addicted. As mayor, he launched a 10-year plan in 2008 to end the crisis. Yet, since 2011, the city’s homeless population has increased by about 35%. His latest effort to combat homelessness as the governor involves building 1,200 tiny homes across the state — to the tune of $30 million — as temporary shelters for the homeless. None of those will be placed in San Francisco and critics say it will be no more than the rebranding of previous failed attempts to curb homelessness, including Project Homekey which sought to use motels and hotels to house the homeless.

Meanwhile, Newsom is working overtime to lure women to California for abortions. In the fall, he launched a pro-abortion, state-run website that cost $1 million and tells minors from out-of-state how to get abortions in California without their parents’ permission. It also includes a section for undocumented immigrants, instructing them on how to get taxpayer-funded abortions through Medicaid.

Newsom also launched a billboard campaign using Bible verses to build abortion tourism in his state, placing those billboards in states with pro-life laws. He is attempting to build up California as an abortion sanctuary and to make abortion easier to access, and he is spending $200 million to do so.

One ad, placed in South Dakota, states, “South Dakota doesn’t own your body. You do” and depicts a woman in handcuffs. Newsom also criticizes the pro-life states as being “anti-freedom” and promises that California will “defend your right to make decisions about your own health.” He’s being accused of pushing the abortion agenda for the benefit of a potential 2024 presidential run.

“It is very interesting to see Governor Newsom’s 2024 primary [presidential] campaign extend to Mississippi,” Cory Custer, deputy chief of staff for external affairs for Gov. Tate Reeves, said. “But we do suspect that most Mississippians will not be interested in what he is selling.”

One Twitter user made the connection and commented on the now-viral video of the woman giving birth, telling Newsom “…after you are done telling us how terrible Florida is or whatever, mind cleaning up your own backyard? The negative ads when you run for president will literally just be a feed of daily SF horrors like this.”

According to the San Francisco Standard, such ‘public view’ births are rare. In 2007, in San Francisco, a woman gave birth on the sidewalk and then abandoned the baby. In 2022, a deceased baby was found in a port-a-potty of a San Francisco city-sanctioned homeless encampment. Every year, more than a dozen babies are born to parents living on the streets of San Francisco, an expert told The Standard.

Meanwhile, the Homeless Prenatal Program (HPP), a family resource center in San Francisco, is working to help homeless and low-income families, serving about 3,500 each year through a variety of programs and services to help them become self-sufficient. Those services include perinatal services, safe housing, job training, and financial education. More than half of HPP’s staff of 100 is comprised of formerly homeless mothers or graduates of the agency’s year-long Community Health Worker Program, which trains women for careers in the nonprofit sector.
