Country singer and Yellowstone actor Luke Grimes has opened up about his new role: that of Dad. Grimes says his growing family brings him “more joy than anything” — including his success as a musician and actor.

Grimes welcomed his first child, Rigel, with wife Bianca last month. In an interview with PEOPLE, he spoke fondly of his newborn saying, “Man, having my baby has changed everything in every way possible.”

“I think people talk about your heart expanding a little bit every day, and it’s so true,” he went on. “It’s like there’s a love growing inside of me that I didn’t know I was capable of, and it’s incredible and it’s scary because you have so much more skin in the game. You know what I mean?”

Finding his heart opening up with the addition of a new baby didn’t come as a surprise to him, as he went on to say, “I knew one day I wanted to start my own family, and I knew that that was going to be where the real happiness came from. The other stuff was just going to pay the bills.”

In speaking to Good Morning America, he called fatherhood “the biggest event that’s ever happened in my life.” “I’m still processing how it’s changing me, you know, day by day.”

The musician told PEOPLE his next album “will be very heavily influenced by having [his son] around,” adding, “That’s the biggest influence in my life right now.”

He also shared the sweet way in which he and Bianca have grown closer after the birth of their little boy.

“It’s brought me and my wife close in a way that I didn’t know we could be. There’s another level in the way that we love each other and how we have to be a team for this little guy,” he explained.

“It’s been an amazing journey.”
