Sitcom “Mom” donates $250K to Planned Parenthood

Every year during Emmy season, television shows will lobby to be nominated for an award. This usually involves spending large amounts of money, throwing parties in which show runners, producers, and the networks themselves campaign. But instead of spending money on an Emmy campaign, the cast and crew of the CBS sitcom “Mom” decided to instead donate $250,000 to Planned Parenthood.

“Mom” is a sitcom following single mother Christy (Anna Faris – wife of “Guardians of the Galaxy” star Chris Pratt), who is battling drug abuse and alcoholism, and her mother Bonnie (Allison Janney), who is also recovering from drug and alcohol addiction. The show has been applauded for its ability to tackle serious issues while also maintaining its comedic tone. “Mom” was just renewed for a fifth season, and star Allison Janney won back-to-back Emmys for her work on the show, in 2014 and 2015.

Janney appeared on “CBS This Morning” with show creator and executive producer Chuck Lorre to announce the CBS 2017-2018 television lineup, but the two also announced that there would be a massive donation to Planned Parenthood in lieu of an Emmy campaign. “It’s not a statement about the Emmys, we’d love to be included, but it just seemed like such a better way to put that money to work,” Lorre explained.

Janney, who was wearing an “I Stand With Planned Parenthood” shirt, also chimed in. “It makes sense because our show is all about women, and we don’t shy away from dealing with all issues that affect women and families,” she said. “And Planned Parenthood is such an important organization that helps give health services to millions of women and families, and it’s in danger. The House of Representatives voted to defund it. And it’s such a critical time. It made sense that we stand up now and say something and encourage other people to donate to Planned Parenthood, and help this organization.”

Planned Parenthood enthusiastically supported this decision, setting up a special link for people to donate through the “Mom” campaign, and sent out tweets praising the massive donation.

Janney also took to Twitter to encourage people to support Planned Parenthood:

Planned Parenthood also released a statement from the President and CEO of Planned Parenthood Los Angeles, Sue Dunlap:

Across the country, millions of women and men are relying on Planned Parenthood health centers for their basic care — like birth control, life-saving cancer-screenings, and STD testing and treatment. We are committed to being here for them, no matter what. Generous support from our community fuels this work, and we are honored that the team behind “Mom” is launching this campaign at this critical time.

But, as usual, Planned Parenthood and its supporters are playing fast and loose with the facts. While arguing that women are relying on Planned Parenthood for vital health care services, the reality is that the organization’s main focus is, plain and simple, abortion. Health care is not a priority at Planned Parenthood.

Planned Parenthood not only serves only a small percentage of women, but they also only perform just a tiny fraction of health screenings: less than 2 percent of all breast exams, less than 2 percent of all cancer screenings, and less than 1 percent of all Pap tests. Yet time and time again, Planned Parenthood and its allies argue that women need Planned Parenthood to receive taxpayer funding, because so many of them rely on the abortion chain for health care.

The problem with that argument is that Planned Parenthood is seriously outnumbered by comprehensive health care clinics that do provide health care for low-income or uninsured women. The only service that Planned Parenthood provides that these clinics don’t is abortion. If Lorre and Janney knew about Planned Parenthood’s lack of health care services, and the fact that they are so greatly outnumbered by comprehensive health care clinics, would they still be so eager to help Planned Parenthood maintain its taxpayer funding?

It’s time for Planned Parenthood to be defunded. Planned Parenthood provides more abortions than any other single business in the United States, but very little health care. Americans are currently funding the abortion giant to the tune of half a billion dollars every single year. If we really want to improve health care for women, just imagine how far that money could go if it was redirected to actual health care providers, instead of to a chain whose main priority is abortion.
