As Illinois’ tax-funded abortions jump nearly 2000%, state seeks to end parental notice

Illinois, Democrat

Pro-abortion lawmakers in Illinois are seeking to repeal the Parental Notice of Abortion Act, which requires abortionists to notify an adult family member 48 hours before an underage girl undergoes an abortion. According to local news outlets, four lawmakers, the American Civil Liberties Union, and Planned Parenthood of Illinois are pushing the repeal.

This latest pro-abortion legislative maneuver comes just as information about the shocking increase in taxpayer-funded abortions in Illinois has become available. NewsChannel 20 obtained data from the Illinois Department of Healthcare and Family Services following a Freedom of Information Act request on the number of taxpayer abortions. After a 2018 law that allowed insurance to cover elective abortion for Medicaid recipients and members of the state employee health insurance plan went into effect, the state of Illinois issued reimbursements for 1,561 abortions from January to June 2018. According to a department spokesperson, in that same period in 2017, the state made reimbursements for just 84 abortions.

That’s a 1758% increase (1,477 abortions) in just one year. The women receiving taxpayer-funded abortions were as young as 12.

The nearly 2000% increase in taxpayer-funded abortions is alarming. The proposed further changes to abortion law that would allow children to undergo abortions without notifying an adult family member are also concerning, especially considering the abortion industry’s well-documented history of aiding abusers by ignoring victims and covering up abuse.

Illinois Family Institute Executive Director David Smith noted that repealing the parental notice law violates parental rights. “This repeal strips parents of their rights and parents should be able to consult with their daughter during a pregnancy crisis,” he said.

A local mother reacted passionately, saying if her teenage daughter was allowed to undergo an abortion without notifying her, “It would be hurtful; it would be very upsetting.” She added, “Just think of you in that situation.”
