A Southern California weather broadcast was interrupted in the sweetest way as the meteorologist’s infant son made an unexpected appearance on her 5:40 AM broadcast.
Like many parents, ABC7’s Leslie Lopez started working from home amid the COVID-19 pandemic last year while pregnant and in her third trimester. In April, she welcomed her son, Nolan. Social media followers have been treated to adorable photos of Nolan in costumes and cute outfits, showing off his developmental milestones. And viewers got a taste of his latest milestone on live TV, as he unexpectedly toddled up to his mother’s legs to ask for cuddles.
Lopez was reporting the weather when she realized her son had launched himself at her legs. “There’s a baby down below,” Lopez chuckled before continuing on with her report, not missing a beat. At the end of the broadcast, she scooped him up. “He walks now, guys, so I’ve lost all control,” she joked.

Lopez’ colleague, anchor Brandi Hitt tweeted the sweet moment, which quickly went viral. “Baby on the move! There is no stopping adorable Nolan now that he can walk during Mommy’s ( @abc7leslielopez ) forecast.”
The humorous episode provided a glimpse into the lives of many parents who have worked from home since the start of the pandemic. It instantly resonated with her followers, who praised her multitasking abilities. “A mom can be a meteorologist & work from home & be a mom & give an interesting report! Everything in this video is right and shows how we can adapt to be more flexible for parents and others in the workplace,” wrote one supporter. Fellow broadcasting professionals including Dan Rather and Elizabeth Banks praised her poise in the moment.

Lopez later told Good Morning America after the clip went viral that Nolan had recently learned to pull himself from sitting to standing. “On one hand, I’m so proud of him… and I’m so glad he didn’t face-plant on live television.”
In a Facebook post, Lopez thanked everyone who had tweeted their support, and she gently ribbed her husband. “Working from home has truly been a blessing amidst a difficult year, and I’m heartened to hear others find it relatable. Work/home life-balance can be difficult, but in some ways this pandemic, at times, has offered incredibly special moments. Thanks for enjoying this with us – It means more than you know. My husband also feels vindicated for doing a ‘great job’ at babysitting.”
