Bishops slam French president’s efforts to expand abortion across Europe

Emmanuel Macron, France, assisted suicide, suicide

French President Emmanuel Macron has made no secret that he is pro-abortion on the question of life. He has consistently echoed these sentiments during his tenure and has recently stated he plans on expanding abortion not just in France, but also in Europe.

As Live Action News previously reported, Macron wants the European Union Charter of Human Rights to be “revised” to include a “right to abortion.” Pro-life organizations like Alliance VITA have pushed back, noting that the charter as it currently stands guarantees that “everyone has the right to life.”

Despite Macron’s desire to change this, a group of religious leaders is fighting back against this idea.

Newsbook reports that the Standing Committee of the Commission of the Bishops’ Conferences of the European Union (COMECE) released a statement criticizing the “revision” to the charter. “But we would like to point out that one of the main values is the respect for the dignity of every human person in every stage of his or her life, especially in situations of complete vulnerability, as is the case of an unborn child,” COMECE said“Caring for women who are in a difficult or a conflict situation because of their pregnancy is a central part of the diaconal ministry of the Church and must also be a duty exercised by our societies.”

COMECE notes that “there is no recognized right to abortion in European or international law. Attempting to change this… not only goes against fundamental European beliefs and values, but would be an unjust law, devoid of an ethical foundation and destined to be a cause of perpetual conflict among the citizens of the EU.”

“The proposal of President Macron of inserting this supposed right can in no way be seen as ‘breathing new life into our basic rights,’” the group added.

On this question, in France abortion is legal as it is in most parts of Europe, but adding the horrifying practice to a “charter of human rights” would unilaterally remove the human rights of children in the womb.

Abortion is the wholesale slaughter of preborn children and despite its legal status, it is still immoral. Tying it to a charter, even a multinational one, does not change this fact.
