Next month, Vermonters will vote on Proposal 5 which, if passed, would add abortion as a right in the state constitution, ensuring that preborn babies will not be protected from abortion at any age for any reason in the state.
During her testimony before the Vermont House Human Services Committee on January 22, 2019 — the 46th anniversary of Roe v. Wade, when legalized abortion was forced upon states — abortionist Lauren MacAfee failed to properly describe what a second-trimester Dilation and Evacuation (D&E) abortion procedure entails.
MacAfee commits abortions at the University of Vermont Medical Center in Burlington, Vermont, where elective abortions are carried out. She is also an assistant professor in the Department of Obstetrics, Gynecology and Reproductive Services at the university, presumably training medical students on how to abort babies. After being asked about D&X or partial-birth abortion, MacAfee stated, “So, abortions in the second trimester and beyond, which are exceptionally rare and make up less than 10% of all abortions that take place in the United States, can be done in one of two ways. One is an induction abortion which is similar to a labor induction and having a vaginal birth and then the other is through a dilation and evacuation procedure, which is a surgical procedure.”
MacAfee then went on to accurately describe an induction abortion after the age of “viability” — which is considered to be about 24 weeks, though babies as young as 21 weeks have a chance of surviving a premature birth when given proper medical care.
“And the induction process above viability and the circumstances in which those abortions take place almost exclusively all providers will administer a feticidal injection ahead of time,” she said. “So they will inject something into the pregnancy or the fetus to stop the heartbeat prior to the induction taking place so that the fetus dies on the inside prior to being delivered.”
In the video below, former abortionist Dr. Patti Giebink explains an induction abortion:
What MacAfee failed to say is that when an induction abortion is carried out prior to viability, feticide may not be administered and babies can be born alive and survive.
In 2021, one baby aborted at 20 weeks by induction abortion in the UK lived for more than five hours. Another child, Baby Rowan, was born alive during an induction abortion at 22 weeks in the U.S. as his mother screamed for someone to help him.
MacAfee then began to describe how a D&E abortion is carried out. “In a Dilation and Evacuation, the surgical procedure, oftentimes what happens is the umbilical cord is clamped and transected prior to the procedure starting, so again, effectively stopping the heartbeat of the fetus before any further action is taken.”
But this is an abbreviated description of a D&E procedure, which is not always begun by stopping the fetal heartbeat. Some abortionists clamp the umbilical cord as MacAfee described, some administer feticide to cause cardiac arrest, and others skip this step altogether.
The “further action” that MacAfee alluded to involves human dismemberment, as shown in the medically animated video below by former abortionist Dr. Kathy Aultman:
Whether the preborn child’s heartbeat is stopped or not, during a D&E abortion, the abortionist will tear the child’s legs and arms from his or her torso. If the child has not been killed prior to this, she will be aware of pain during this process. When that portion of the procedure is complete, the abortionist will crush the child’s skull.
Former abortionist Dr. Anthony Levatino described this as “the toughest part of a D&E.”
“The head of a baby that age is about the size of a plum and is now free floating inside the uterine cavity,” he explained in a video for Live Action. “You can be pretty sure you have hold of it if the Sopher clamp is spread about as far as your fingers will allow. You will know you have it right when you crush down on the clamp and see a pure white gelatinous material issue from the cervix. That was the baby’s brains. You can then extract the skull pieces. If you have a really bad day like I often did, a little face may come out and stare back at you….”
It is clear why MacAfee avoided explaining this part of a D&E abortion procedure to the Vermont legislators present at the hearing. A D&E is a gruesome, horrific, and inhumane procedure that gives abortionists nightmares. Hiding the truth of what abortion is and how it kills, is one of the ways abortion advocates have managed to gain support for legalized abortion.
Regardless of the procedure used or the frequency in which later induced abortions are carried out, the goal of each induced abortion is to produce a dead baby.
