Abortion industry trying to draw clients for ‘post-abortion care’ and ultrasounds in pro-life states

For decades, society has been sold the lie that abortion is safe and that women do not suffer complications from abortion, incomplete procedures, or other potentially serious health risks requiring post-abortion care. But the truth is that for decades the pro-life movement has documented inept abortion providers, ambulances summoned to abortion and Planned Parenthood centers for injured abortion clients, abortion-related deaths, and a host of complications and risks.

Now, since the reversal of Roe v. Wade, the abortion industry is using a new tactic to keep women coming through their doors: offering “post-abortion care” as well as “follow-up care” (like ultrasound screenings) in states that protect preborn children from abortion.

In April of 2022, the operator of @abortionsquad tweeted, “the Clinics in red states will be needed to provide ‘post-abortion care’ as they do in countries where abortion is illegal. Patients who are self-managing abortions need to have somewhere they can go if they want follow-up care (such as ultrasound or bloodwork to confirm it worked).”

In a recent webinar previously documented by Live Action News, panelist “DJ” from If/When/How told viewers they could “get care” after complications from a chemical abortion by going to the doctor, ER, or hospital. “DJ” instructed viewers to mislead health care providers by simply telling them, “I’m bleeding and cramping and I don’t know what’s going on.”

“One can go in and say they think they had a miscarriage,” she also stated.

“DJ” added, “And there are also some clinics that because they can no longer provide abortion care, they are providing after care.” A list of those facilities is allegedly found on the website known as “Still open clinics.”

There you will find a link to Houston Women’s Reproductive Services, which states on its website, “We are no longer able to provide the abortion pill. We are able to provide pre-abortion ultrasounds, post-abortion follow-ups, and referrals tailored to your personal needs. Please call for assistance.”

This former abortion pill facility stresses that “An Accurate Ultrasound Is Important,” writing online that “Many people have false positive pregnancy tests, miss their periods for reasons other than pregnancy, or are further along in the pregnancy than dates indicate or experience a miscarriage in early pregnancy. There is always the small chance of an ectopic (tubal pregnancy) which requires different treatment. We can provide referrals to other states where you can receive an abortion and they may require an ultrasound before scheduling.”

Under Roe, the abortion industry vehemently opposed pro-life measures requiring ultrasounds before an abortion could be committed. Now, under Dobbs, abortion facilities which are no longer able to commit abortions are using ultrasounds as a lure to get women in their doors.

In Texas, the State’s heartbeat bill (SB8) and other pro-life measures set in motion a litany of abortion business closures with multiple abortion centers leaving the state. Some of the remaining abortion facilities, now unable to commit abortions, are pivoting toward “post-abortion care.”

In one example, a GoFundMe page for the Austin Women’s Center is raising money toward “Abortion care referral services” and “Abortion follow-up services.”

The facility’s website reads in part, “Post-abortion care may not always be necessary. If you have had a surgical abortion or medical abortion using Mifepristone and Misoprostol with no complications, a follow-up appointment is not required but can offer emotional support and reassurance in a safe and private environment.” The facility added, “As experts in post-abortion care, we can see you for any complications that may arise close to your home.”

“We are the only clinic in Austin, Texas, that offers same or next-day ultrasound appointments,” the Austin Women’s Center website also claimed, causing some to speculate that this “same day” service is only offered to provide ultrasounds for women who plan to travel out of state for an abortion.

The clinic’s GoFundMe goes on to state, “Early ultrasounds can diagnose miscarriage or confirm an ectopic pregnancy, where the embryo implants outside of the uterus. Left untreated, ectopic pregnancies are life-threatening. Early ultrasounds can be life-saving.”

Despite this, Big Abortion has been selling abortion pills to women via the “no-test” protocol, which removed any requirements for ultrasounds that could rule out ectopic pregnancies. But now, stunningly, abortion facilities that can no longer commit abortions are suggesting women purchase an ultrasound.

Austin Women’s Center also claimed, “If our clinic were to close, people in need of early ultrasounds would be left without the critical and timely care they might need. We know that in Austin, when people search for ultrasounds, they may come across anti-abortion crisis pregnancy centers, which have been found to lie about ultrasound results to dissuade people from getting an abortion. This is dangerous.”

Earlier this year, Alabama abortion clinic operator Robin Marty tweeted their willingness to clean up for incomplete abortions or abortion complications brought on by out-of-state abortion providers, writing: “Last thing. Our clinic WILL see you if you self-managed and need a follow up. We will see you if you had a procedure out of state. We will see you if you have substance abuse and still need prenatal care. We will see you if you are miscarrying and afraid you could be investigated.”

In Indiana, Planned Parenthood Great Northwest, Hawaiʻi, Alaska, Indiana, Kentucky (PPGNHAIK) is also offering “post-abortion care,” according to affiliate president and CEO Rebecca Gibron’s Twitter account.

The Indy Star reported that “Indiana became the first state in the country to pass a new abortion law last summer following the fall of Roe v. Wade. Senate Bill 1, which was signed by Gov. Eric Holcomb in August, bans abortions except in cases of rape or incest, when there’s a serious risk to the life of the mother or when fatal fetal anomalies are present.”

In a separate article the media outlet reported, “While the nonprofit will not be able to schedule more abortions in Indiana, Planned Parenthood said in a news release that it would help Hoosier patients seeking abortion to book appointments in states where the procedure is legal… Indiana patients can still receive pre-abortion care and post-abortion care at Planned Parenthood. Clinics will also still offer pregnancy education consultations, where pregnant people can have an ultrasound, learn how far along they are and discuss their options with providers.”

The scheme to use existing abortion facilities — which can no longer commit abortions because of current pro-life measures — for follow-up or “post-abortion care” is evidence that pro-life sidewalk counselors remain necessary in states with pro-life protections to assist a woman in obtaining abortion pill reversal, or in referring her for proper medical care.

In addition, a peaceful prayerful presence in front of these stagnant abortion facilities could also open the possibility of a counseling encounter with an abortion-minded woman stopping by for an out-of-state referral.
