New Jersey officials announced Tuesday that the state has begun stockpiling the abortion pill drug mifepristone ahead of the inauguration of President-elect Donald Trump.
Governor Phil Murphy made the announcement during his State of the State address, noting that the state plans to have a six-month supply on hand.
“A couple of years ago, New Jersey worked proactively to protect abortion rights months before Roe was overturned,” he stated during the address. “And now, we must further secure our reputation as a safe haven for reproductive freedom.”
“First, I am once again calling on the Legislature to pass a law that will scrap out-of-pocket costs for abortion procedures…,” Murphy said. “Additionally — and in light of the anti-choice policies supported by the current majorities in Congress — today, I am also announcing that New Jersey will begin stockpiling a supply of mifepristone, so every woman can access this crucial form of reproductive care.”
Murphy told HuffPost that his aim in stockpiling the pill is to increase access and make abortion more affordable.
“Stockpiling mifepristone will protect access to this vital health care, and eliminating out-of-pocket costs for abortion procedures will continue our work to make reproductive health care affordable,” he said. “These efforts build upon the protections and services we have invested in over the past seven years.”
According to HuffPost, the stockpile is being paid for as part of a $50 million investment allocated in the state’s 2025 budget for “reproductive health care services.” The money will also be used statewide to hire more abortion facility workers and upgrade abortion businesses.
The abortion pill drug mifepristone kills the preborn child by blocking the effects of progesterone, a naturally-occurring pregnancy hormone that ensures the baby gets the nutrients it needs to survive. Without adequate progesterone, the preborn child is starved of nutrients in her mother’s womb. As part of the regimen, mifepristone is followed by the drug misoprostol, which causes the mother to go into labor, delivering the body of her child.
The abortion pill comes with numerous complications and has been found to be four times more dangerous than a first-trimester abortion. Many women who take the abortion pill do so alone, without the direct oversight of a physician while using a no-test protocol, and there are numerous stories from women who were unprepared for the pain and trauma taking the abortion pill caused.
