Representative Andre Jacque has authored a constitutional amendment to the Wisconsin constitution that, if adopted, will protect people at all stages of development, including those who are not yet born. If it is approved, the constitution will be amended to read:
All people are equally free and independent, and have certain inherent rights; among these are life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness; to secure these rights, governments are instituted, deriving their just powers from the consent of the governed. As applied to the right to life, the terms “people” and “person” shall apply to every human being at any stage of development.
The constitution, as currently written, protects only those who are born.
According to Personhood Wisconsin, this amendment “seeks to end abortion in Wisconsin, not to regulate or restrict it. It seeks to end all violence toward preborn children in Wisconsin – surgical, chemical, experimental, etc. – at all stages of development.”
Pro-Life Wisconsin reports that Representative Andre Jacque is looking for co-sponsers to this proposed amendment. They encourage those from Wisconsin to call their state representatives and senators and ask them to co-sponsor LRB 0130/1, also known as the “Wisconsin Personhood Amendment.”
In order to become part of the constitution, this amendment would need to be adopted by two successive legislatures and then ratified by the people of Wisconsin.
