Israeli couple remembered for saving infant twins by hiding them as Hamas invaded

A young Israeli couple is reported to have saved the lives of their 10-month-old twin boys by hiding them in a secure room when members of Hamas broke into their home.

According to the Israeli ambassador to Colombia, Gali Dagan, the couple, Adar and Itay Berdychivsky, heard a commotion at their front door and hid their sons in a bomb shelter before the Hamas members entered the home.

Adar and Itay, who were both army officers, then proceeded to try to fight off the gunmen, reportedly killing seven of them before being shot and killed themselves.

The family lived in Kfar Aza, the same village where Hamas is reported to have killed at least 40 infants and children, beheading some of them. i24News reported that an Israeli commander on the scene said they had found women and “babies with their heads cut off” and claimed he had “never seen acts of brutality” like this before.

Oleh Vyshniakov, Israel’s consul in Ukraine’s Western Region, shared the twins’ story on his Facebook page. “They’re safe now, they’re surrounded by love and care,” he wrote. “Itay’s brother and Adar’s father, who fought the militants for hours and saved dozens of people — though couldn’t reach their own relatives in time, found them.”

Concerning the violence in Israel, Live Action President and Founder Lila Rose said in an email, “All persons are made in the image of God, and it’s never right to harm an innocent person. Every human being possesses human rights, the first being life.”

Adar and Itay put their children’s well-being ahead of their own, even sacrificing their own lives to protect them, and doing everything they could to ensure their sons lived and had a chance to grow up, despite the odds that seemed stacked against them in those moments. Dagan referred to the couple as “heroes.”

He tweeted, “The babies were left alone for more than 12 hours until they were rescued. Imagine the horror. Two terrified parents doing everything they can to save their children, who are now orphaned. Blessed be the memory of these heroes.”
