Elderly disabled woman’s third request for assisted suicide granted after she was raped

assisted suicide, Dutch, physician-assisted suicide

An unidentified, bedridden woman had already submitted two requests for euthanasia prior to being raped in a facility in Belgium in July, 2022. After this, she submitted a third request to die, which was granted. Solicitor Walter Damen said the woman sought assisted suicide because her health had “seriously failed in recent years.”

Kris Moedts, 36, attacked the disabled 89-year-old in Lint, where he is a local citizen. According to lawyers, the attack “defies all imagination.” The Daily Mail reported that Moedts was drunk and high on cocaine when he entered the care facility. The prosecutor told the court that the man wheeled another home resident inside the building, went to the victim’s room, and then barricaded the door.

The victim reported that Moedts “crawled into bed with her and groped her extensively.” The prosecutor continued, “She cried and screamed fiercely and luckily managed to push the alarm button.”

A facility caretaker pushed his way into the room, and lawyers said that when the caretaker came in, “he saw the man standing next to the bed barefoot and heard the lady crying. The sheet and underpants of the lady had been pulled down, which she could not have done herself in her state of health. He was so shocked by what he saw there that he later asked for the help of the victim support services himself.”

Moedts was able to escape out the the back door but was caught by the police soon after.

Following the attack, the elderly woman requested the right to die a third time, and her request was approved.

Solicitor Walter Damen said, “What Kris has done to her now defies all imagination and has hurt her deeply. So deep that her third request for euthanasia has been approved.”

The lawyers explained to the Belgian court that the woman specifically delayed the request so that she would be able to see her attacker jailed. He was sentenced earlier this week to eight years imprisonment.

Moedts’ attorney, Xavier Potvin, said, “According to him, it would never have happened if he hadn’t taken that cocaine. That caused him to black out. In fact, there is no evidence that he is sexually attracted to the elderly.”

The woman’s assisted suicide was scheduled for December 12.
