In a recent interview with CNN’s Dana Bash, California Gov. Gavin Newsom refused to state where a legal cut-off limit on abortion should be, and perpetuated the lie that pro-abortion politicians do not support abortion up to birth.
Men have abandoned women and children
Bash said she wanted Newsom to “be clear about what the limits on abortion should be.” But Newsom refused to offer a legal limit on aborting preborn children.
“The policy, it’s not up to Donald Trump or me. It’s up to you, the women,” he told Bash, “that have to bear that responsibility uniquely and distinctively. And the reality is it’s a canard… It’s total BS.”

Telling women alone that they “have to bear that responsibility” of pregnancy, childbirth, and abortion is one of the very reasons women feel pressured into abortion to begin with.
Countless women have shared that had their husbands or boyfriends not said it was ‘her decision’ that they wouldn’t have had abortions. When a man tells a woman abortion is “her decision” and that pregnancy is her “responsibility,” as Newsom is, he is putting pressure on her, not supporting her. If she chooses an abortion, he is no longer responsible for a child, but any remorse or regret she feels is hers alone because he told her it was ‘her choice.’ If she chooses to have the child, she may be raising the child alone because it was “her decision.”
Women were never meant to bear the responsibilities of pregnancy and childbirth alone, but men — weak and abusive ones — have abandoned them and their children.
The government’s role in abortion limits
Bash then asked Newsom if he supports the abortion law in his own state, where abortion is allowed for any reason up to viability at about 24 weeks, and if it is the government’s role to make that decision.
“It’s not our role to make that decision,” said Newsom.
Bash replied, “So there should be nothing on the books [for abortion limits]?”
Newsom said, “This is a canard. This is a false flag… because they [pro-lifers] don’t believe in fundamental choice and freedom for women. They don’t. Period. Full stop. And this whole issue is a political issue.”
Abortion is not about “choice” or “freedom.” It’s the deliberate and intentional killing of a living human being. No one has the right to kill an innocent human being.
Late abortion lies
Newsom then went on to erroneously claim that late abortions are only done for health reasons. “After you’ve picked out the name of the baby and then you’re forced to make this terrible decision at the end of the term and to exploit that for political purposes offends me,” he said.
However, actual research shows that abortions late into pregnancy are not exclusively carried out on babies who have serious health conditions or on women who are facing health challenges. Women and girls have abortions late into pregnancy for a variety of reasons — even the same reasons as women seeking early abortions.
One study from the pro-abortion group ANSIRH states: “The reasons people need third-trimester abortions are not so different from why people need abortions before the third trimester… [T]he circumstances that lead to someone needing a third-trimester abortion have overlaps with the pathways to abortion at other gestations.”
A 2016 pro-abortion Guttmacher Institute report revealed that at least 75% of abortions at 13 weeks and beyond were elective — meaning the mother chose to abort her baby after 13 weeks without any indication of medical necessity. It’s important to understand that abortion — the direct and intentional killing of an undelivered child — is not medically necessary.
But, even if every late abortion was being committed due to a fetal diagnosis or the mother’s health, those abortions are still unnecessary and a horrific act to ask of a mother and father. As Newsom himself said, “[Y]ou’ve picked out the name of the baby and then you’re forced to make this terrible decision.” Who is ‘forcing’ them to make this “terrible decision?” No woman should be ‘forced‘ to decide to abort her child for eugenic reasons such as a fetal diagnosis, and no woman should feel ‘forced’ to choose between her life and her child’s when there is never a medical indication for intentionally killing a child at any point in pregnancy.
Every OB/GYN should know how to deliver a child to save the mother’s life without first taking the time to kill that child through induced abortion. If a pregnancy must end, the doctor can perform a C-section or a preterm delivery should treat that child as a patient. Neither are induced abortions and neither are prohibited by any pro-life law.
As far as political exploitation, abortion advocates have long exploited tragic stories of children’s diagnoses to promote legal induced abortion through birth for any reason.
By saying that it is not the government’s right to limit the killing of preborn children at any point, Newsom is supporting abortion up to birth for any reason.
The Democratic Party position on abortion
Bash again asked, “I just want to be clear because people are going to be listening very carefully to what you’re saying. You do not believe it is the role of government nationally or state government to have any limits on the books legally?”
Newsom said he has long believed in viability as the limit on abortion, but he added, “My point to this is no one wants to see the late, late-term abortions. No one’s out there promoting that. That’s not what the Democratic party’s position is. That’s not what my personal position is.”
But he’s wrong. The official Democratic Party position is to “codify” a so-called ‘right’ to abortion. It aims to overturn all federal and state laws that protect preborn children from abortion, even those that exist to limit abortion after viability (read about the proposed extreme “Women’s Health Protection Act” here). The Democratic Party’s 2020 official platform states, “Democrats are committed to protecting and advancing reproductive health, rights, and justice.” (emphasis added). They don’t want any restrictions on abortion — they want to expand access wider than it has ever been.
