The Kansas Legislature recently passed a bill later signed into law by pro-life Governor Sam Brownback, which would defund Planned Parenthood, the nation’s largest abortion chain. But the bill had barely left the governor’s desk before Planned Parenthood filed a lawsuit.
While Planned Parenthood Advocates of Kansas & Mid-Missouri decried the law as one which would “punish the women and men who have freely chosen Planned Parenthood for their health care for decades,” the truth is that all of the funds currently received by Planned Parenthood would be redirected to Federally Qualified Health Centers (FQHCs), which vastly outnumber Planned Parenthood facilities and provide more comprehensive health care.
As is trending on Facebook for Wednesday, the state must continue to fund Planned Parenthood until July. This is the third delay, with Planned Parenthood Advocates of Kansas and Mid-Missouri boasting that “Planned Parenthood is still delivering high quality health care to Medicaid patients,” with the hashtag #PPKMAlwaysWins.
But Planned Parenthood has quite the history of problems when it comes to Medicaid – namely, fraud. As Live Action News’s Cassy Fiano reported late last year:
…45 public audits of Planned Parenthood affiliates, along with 57 audits of state family planning programs, found waste, fraud, and abuse to the tune of $129.7 million.
In addition to uncovering taxpayer fraud at Planned Parenthood, ADF also discovered that Planned Parenthood has engaged in improper billing with Medicaid, billing in excess of the actual cost, billing for services that were not necessary, and making duplicate bills. Planned Parenthood’s Medicaid fraud contributed to the total amount of all improperly billed federal Medicaid payments in the nation, which equaled $14.4 billion in 2013 alone.
What’s also interesting is how Facebook characterized Planned Parenthood – as a “health services provider.”
Planned Parenthood: Kansas Delays Defunding Health Services Provider Following Lawsuit DelayOfficials said funds would continue to the abortion provider until July after lawyers hired by the state left while preparing for a lawsuit over Kansas cutting Medicaid funding to Planned Parenthood.
