One Montana couple welcomed home a rare set of identical triplets from the hospital, just in time for Thanksgiving.
Sami and Theo Hampton told Good Morning America they were shocked to learn that they were expecting triplets, especially because they had nothing in their family history that suggested they were likely to give birth to multiples.
“I think every indicator of having multiples… we did not check any of the boxes, which is having family members that have had that, having kids already, having kids a little later in life. All the things that are indicators of having multiples, we didn’t check off any of those boxes,” Theo explained.
“My one egg split three ways, so it was just insane,” Sami added.
The triplets, Gwynevere, Calliope, and Scarlett, were born on October 12, but the girls had to spend some time in the NICU before they could join their parents at home.
Sami’s doctor, Dr. Michael Gordon, told GMA that the girls are monochorionic diamniotic triplets, which means that two of the babies shared a sac and all three shared one placenta — a rare situation. “It’s really uncommon,” he explained.
Despite the fact that there were some risks with the pregnancy, Gordon credits Sami and Theo for their positivity through it all.
“I remember talking to Sami and Theo, the first day, I think it was a Friday — it took about an hour and a half. We just kept going over risk [after] risk, and that young couple never wavered in their belief,” he said. “They never wavered in their trust. And it was amazing how good a young couple they are.”
Despite being born early at 32 weeks, the girls are all in good health.
“They were born with no complications and they are all ahead of schedule from what we anticipated. We were honestly expecting to take them home more like mid-December, so even that got pretty quick,” Theo explained. “So, they’ve just been doing really great every step of the way. And for all their benchmarks, they’ve been killing it.”
“I know just that these girls are just the biggest blessing, and I can’t imagine our lives without them,” Sami said. “I’m so thankful and so excited and looking forward to this, and it’s really helpful to have such a supportive partner and amazing dad to help us. It’s just wonderful.”
