Planned Parenthood claims that abortion is only 3% of all their services but a new analysis of some reports shows that Planned Parenthood knows this is not true. As Live Action News has previously reported, stats collected from Planned Parenthood’s latest annual report published in 2015 shows that abortion is more likely 22.6% of the abortion businesses total revenue source.
The 3% claim is ludicrous if you break it down in terms of their “services” as well. In fact, if other organizations did this type of fuzzy math to deceive tax payers they would be rightly called out by the media, but where Planned Parenthood is concerned the media continuously publishes misleading claims by the multi-million dollar tax funded business rightly dubbed an abortion chain.
For example, Planned Parenthood of the Great Northwest’s 2012 annual report shows their “abortion services” totaled 8% that year, which is much higher than the 3% claim they generally give. The next year in 2013 , they claimed that abortion services were again 8% of their overall services. However, this Planned Parenthood failed to list how many actual abortions that translates to making it impossible to confirm their claim at all.
A look at Planned Parenthood of Orange & San Bernardino Counties (PPOSBC) exposed by the Center for Medical Progress (CMP) for their role in the transaction of aborted baby body parts, reveals abortion services at this location are well over the 3% claimed nationally. However, since this abortion center chain doesn’t list their abortion totals, we cannot estimate what percentage of revenue comes from abortion but it is likely much higher than the estimated 22.6% nationally.
In their 2014-2015 annual report PPOSBC states “abortions services” amount to 5.9% of their overall services, nearly double PP’s 3% national claim. In fact the previous year, PPOSBC claimed that their abortion services were 6.3% and the year prior to that the number was 6.1%, a trend that existed despite receiving millions in Government grants and contracts. Although this abortion center does not publish their total abortion numbers Planned Parenthood centers that do reveal high abortion revenues which exceed 3%.
Case in point, Planned Parenthood Mar Monte’s (PPMM) 2014 annual report shows abortion services were almost 4% where they performed 18,169 abortions and took in a total revenue of $93,533,600 that year. They were also exposed by CMP for involvement with the grisly baby parts operation.
As Live Action News has previously calculated, Planned Parenthood reported that in 2009, the average surgical abortion cost $451 and the average drug based abortion cost $483. Using average inflation since 2009, we can summarize that an abortion would have cost $490 and $525 respectively in 2014. If we simply use the lower figure and we do not add in higher costs for abortions performed later in the pregnancy, we can estimate that in 2014, abortion brought in at least $8,902,810.00 to the PMM’s California centers. But, if we calculate in the later term abortions using averages published by Guttmacher as 11% and 23% being drug based abortions we get the following:
1998 abortions in the second trimester ($1200ea) = $2,397,600
4179 drug induced abortions ($525ea) = $2,193,975
11,992 1st trimester surgical abortions ($490ea) $5,876,080
____________________________________________________________
Total $10,467,655 at least 10% of their overall revenue. Since the revenue source listed in their report also includes donations and other sources we can assume that abortion brings Planned Parenthood and even higher percentage.
In 2015 Planned Parenthood of the Pacific Southwest’s (PPSW) total revenue was $57,357,385 and they performed 14,352 abortions. The overall patient visits were 271,432 making abortion 5% of the patients they served. If we use the same calculations (and do not add in inflation or later term abortions) we would see that abortions were at least 12 1/2% of their overall revenue.
5047 drug induced abortions ($525ea) = $2,649,675
9305 1st trimester surgical abortions ($490ea) $4,559,450
____________________________________________________________
Total $7,209,125 at least 12.5% of their overall revenue. These figures from PPSW’s report do not break down the amount of more expensive later term abortions and could therefore translate into a much higher percentage of overall revenue. In addition, since the total revenue includes contributions and other sources you can see the potential for this figure to climb.
In 2014 abortions totaled 13,932 at Planned Parenthood of the Pacific Southwest and their revenue totaled $57,240,377. Without calculating in the higher second trimester abortions we estimate that abortion was easily 12% of their revenue:
4486 drug induced abortions ($525ea) = $2,355,150
9446 1st trimester surgical abortions ($490ea) $4,628,540
____________________________________________________________
Total $6,983,690 at least 12% of their overall revenue. Again without adding in the higher later term abortion costs as well as using PPSW’s full revenue which includes contributions and other sources, we still see the number exceeding the 3% claim.
As a matter of interest, the 5% “abortion services” amount was reported by PPSW for several years even though the revenue/abortion totals differed from year to year as indicated below.
2012, 14,357 abortions/$61,723,000 total revenue.
2011 16,309 abortions/$56,218,300 total revenue.
2010 15,629 abortions/ $54,739,200 total revenue.
In 2009, Planned Parenthood of the Pacific Southwest’s abortions totaled 17,664 and was listed as only 6.4% of their services. But, although PPSW openly claims that abortions were much higher than 3% at this location, they did not break down their abortion or revenue totals, leaving their abortion services percentages impossible to confirm.
In 2008 Planned Parenthood of San Diego and Riverside Counties (PPSDRC) performed 18,862 abortions and took in total revenue of $44,981,272. They claimed abortion was only 7.1% of their “services” yet if you do the math you learn that abortion is nearly
21% of their overall total revenue. This can be calculated using Guttmacher’s claim that in 2008 the median cost of a surgical abortion at 10 weeks’ gestation was $495, and an early medication abortion cost $500. Even if we leave out the more expensive later term abortions and simply use the lesser amount of $495 per abortion we estimate that $9,336,690 (or more) in revenue was earned for abortions alone. Using the full revenue amount even though it includes contributions and other sources, we can estimate that abortions were almost 21% of their revenue and likely much higher.
PPSDRC claimed that abortion services were only 7% in 2007. According to the report their total revenue was $33,958,920 and included grants and other sources but they do not list the total amount of abortions performed making this yet another example of where their claim cannot be substantiated. The same thing occurred in 2006 where PPSFRC claimed that abortion was as high as 8% with their total revenue at $28,402,646, a much lower figure than the later years.
Planned Parenthood of the Rocky Mountains whose Medical Director, Dr. Savita Ginde, was caught by CMP negotiating a fetal body parts deal, agreeing multiple times to illicit pricing per body part harvested, and where workers identified baby parts as, “another boy” does not list “abortion services” percentages in their most recent annual reports. But a look at their 2012 annual report shows that out of the 106,022 patients served almost 10% or 10,505 were abortion patients. And, nearly 9% of overall patients to PPRM or 10,408 in 2010 were there for an abortion. Using the 2009 average surgical first trimester abortion cost $451 (not including the higher cost of a medical or later term abortion) we can summarize that in 2012 PPRM would have earned at least $4,737,755 which translated into over 16% of their overall revenue and $4,694,008 or 16% of overall revenue in 2010.
Today, Planned Parenthood states on their website that abortion in the first trimester can cost up to $1,500 (and often lower) in the first trimester leaving even more doubt in their 3% claim. The fact is, that for years in order to maintain their half a billion dollars a year tax funding, Planned Parenthood has time and again claimed that abortion is a small part of what they do despite performing over 30% of all US abortions.
