Last month a law went into effect in Arizona that required that abortions must be done by licensed doctor’s only. Planned Parenthood who uses nurses to perform abortions was not happy with Planned Parenthood’s Flagstaff nurse practitioner Beth Otterstein telling Tucson Sentinel:
“I’m very sure we’re going to see illegal abortions crop up, which can be very serious because they can lead to deaths”
In light of this new law, Planned Parenthood has limited which of their locations do abortions because they lack enough licensed doctors to administer the abortions. Because of the lack of doctors that want to do abortions, patients are now having to travel to larger Arizona cities to find an abortionist. The Tucson Sentinel reported that:
Rep. Tom Chabin, D-Flagstaff, who voted against these measures, said he’s concerned that women facing having to travel will seek out black-market abortions.
So it sounds like the core argument against the higher medical standards is that lower medical standards will make abortion easy to access which will stop individuals from wanting to pursue illegal abortions. It is amazing how Planned Parenthood always finds reasons for opposing regulation and oversight of their abortion operation.
Note: Planned Parenthood performs 90% of Arizona abortions.
