Thursday was the National Day of Prayer, and at an event sponsored by Rep. Robert Aderholt, Focus on the Family founder James Dobson was invited to be a speaker. One Democrat congresswoman, Rep. Janice Hahn, interrupted Dobson’s speech before storming out of the event. What invoked Hahn’s fury?
An outraged Democrat congresswoman from California said she was so dismayed to hear James Dobson, the founder of the Christian group Focus on the Family, refer to President Obama as the “abortion president” at Thursday’s National Day of Prayer, she had to leave.
Rep. Janice Hahn stormed from the event shortly after Mr. Dobson spoke, the Huffington Post reported.
Mr. Dobson’s remarks: “President Obama, before he was elected, made it very clear that he wanted to be the abortion president. He didn’t make any bones about it. This is something that he really was going to promote and support and he has done that, and in a sense he is the abortion president.”
… “He goes on about health care and … providing abortions and at that point, I stood up and I pointed my finger at Dr. Dobson and I said, ‘This is inappropriate,’ and I walked out,” she told the Post. “James Dobson hijacked the National Day of Prayer — the nonpartisan, nonpolitical National Day of Prayer — to promote his own distorted political agenda.”
The question of Dobson’s speech aside, here’s a question: what’s wrong with calling Obama the abortion president? And it’s a completely serious question, too. Abortion advocates always claim that they’re pro-choice, and not pro-abortion. Yet they also insist that abortion is not a negative experience, and that women shouldn’t be ashamed of it. Likewise, they surely would argue that advocating for abortion is not only something to not be ashamed of, but something to be proud of.
If this is true — if abortion can be a positive experience, if having one is not a bad thing, and advocating for abortion is something to be proud of — then why is calling Obama the abortion president so insulting? After all, it’s certainly true. There has never been a more pro-abortion president in this country’s history. He thanks God for Planned Parenthood, opposes any restrictions on abortion whatsoever, and even voted against care for babies born alive following a failed abortion. And every step of the way, he’s been applauded and supported by pro-abortion activists.
So, if everything Obama has done in support of abortion truly is good and right, then why is it a negative thing to call him the abortion president? Why should he not wear that title with pride?
Maybe if being called the abortion president is so offensive and wrong, it might be because abortion itself is offensive and wrong. If calling Obama the abortion president truly does upset someone that much, then maybe they need to do a little soul-searching about their support for abortion. After all, if it’s such a positive thing to support abortion so steadfastly, then why be bothered to call him the abortion president?
