Whoopi Goldberg and the myth of ‘middle ground’ on abortion

Polling shows that most Americans want restrictions on abortion, including limiting abortion to the first trimester. When South Carolina Rep. Nancy Mace pointed this out during an interview with the hosts of “The View,” cohost Whoopi Goldberg — who has admitted to personally having multiple abortions — showed viewers why there can never be a compromise on the intentional killing of innocent preborn human beings.

No compromise

During the episode, cohost Alyssa Farah Griffin mentioned the topic of abortion in the realm of politics and the GOP’s position.

Mace responded, “We cannot demonize women… We demonize women who don’t want to be in that position to make the choice. They don’t want to be in a position where they have to decide to have an abortion or not. We have to find a balance to show that we’re pro-life, but we are about women… What I have found is that neither side wants to find the middle ground. The left doesn’t want to tell you what their limits are, the right is ‘zero and no exceptions.’ That’s not where the vast majority of Americans are. They want to be compassionate to women and girls. They want exceptions at some point. We have to decide at what point does the baby has rights and right to life — somewhere in the second trimester.”

Goldberg then began asking irrelevant questions of Mace.

“Do you want the government telling you how to raise your family? … There’s no law on the book that says you have to have an abortion. Isn’t that my choice, if my doctor and I feel that’s the best way for me? If I’m a nice Jewish girl or a girl who has a different religious belief, why am I being held to someone else’s religious beliefs?”

Mace replied, “Well at some point, that baby, people will agree with me, the baby deserves the right to life. You don’t want the government in the room with the doctor and the woman, but those who want the government to pay for it [have] the government in the room with the doctor and the woman. So you can’t have it both ways.”

Goldberg said, “Why am I— why do you want me to go with your belief when that is not my belief?”

This conversation shows exactly why there can never be a compromise on abortion.

Pro-abortion advocates like Goldberg consider a compromise on abortion to be a restriction on women’s rights that is forced on women based on ‘someone else’s belief’ or religion. And Mace considers it an act of compassion to allow the killing of preborn children in certain cases, such as rape.

But pro-life advocates know there can be no compromise when it comes to abortion because induced abortion is the intentional and direct killing of innocent and vulnerable human beings. Just as there can be no compromise on child abuse, rape, or murder, there can be no compromise when it comes to the right to life of preborn human beings.

Preborn babies are living human beings. This is not a religious belief, it’s a scientific fact. Science tells us that preborn babies are innocent living human beings, and moral and criminal law tells us that killing innocent human beings is always wrong. Therefore, abortion is always wrong. No religious beliefs required. Children conceived in rape are just as much innocent human beings as any one else. They should not be deprived of their right to life based on how they were conceived.

The lie that no one supports abortion up to birth

Mace went on to say that currently, states can pass their own laws regarding abortion. She added, “In California and New York, it’s all the way up until nine months.”

Despite Goldberg seemingly advocating for no restrictions on abortion, she claimed, “Let’s stop that. No one, no one, no one — no doctor, no hospital, no one, will take a baby at nine months for an abortion! I’m telling you this. But why is it not my choice? This is the part I’m missing.”

Goldberg’s wrong, and she’s been wrong on this same point before. There are politicians who are calling for abortion on demand throughout pregnancy, while at the same time erroneously claiming that abortion doesn’t happen in the third trimester unless there is a dire medical situation.

California Gov. Gavin Newson recently refused to offer a legal limit on aborting preborn children. Instead, he said it was ‘up to women.’ When asked by CNN’s Dana Bash if he supports abortion up to 24 weeks, he said it is not the government’s role to make that decision. Bash asked, “So there should be nothing on the books [for abortion limits]?”

Newsom replied, “This is a false flag… because [pro-lifers] don’t believe in fundamental choice and freedom for women.” He later claimed that abortions in the third trimester are only carried out for health reasons, sounding much like Goldberg, arguing that abortion should be allowed throughout pregnancy while claiming that abortions late in pregnancy don’t happen.

Vice President Kamala Harris also recently refused to answer if there should be an abortion cut off at any point during pregnancy. When asked about a cut off, she repeatedly said, “We need to restore the protections of Roe v. Wade,” and claimed, “We’re not trying to do something new.” She said it was “ridiculous” to claim that Democrats want abortion to be allowed through birth, while also refusing to pinpoint a limit. The 2024 Democratic party platform states that it wants to codify the right to abortion and “will fight to overturn federal and state laws that create barriers” to abortion.

Research shows that abortions happen throughout pregnancy, even after viability, for any reason; there are abortion facilities that openly state that they commit ‘all trimester’ abortions. The DuPont Clinic, for example, announced on Twitter. “We plan to open Fall 2023 under the leadership of @famplanObGyn. The need for all-trimester abortion care has never been greater.”

In addition, a study from the pro-abortion group ANSIRH found, “The reasons people need third-trimester abortions are not so different from why people need abortions before the third trimester…” and “The circumstances that lead to someone needing a third-trimester abortion have overlaps with the pathways to abortion at other gestations.” These ‘pathways’ include not knowing of the pregnancy until late in the second or third trimester and difficulty arranging an abortion prior to the second or third trimester.

In 2016, a woman in Montreal underwent an abortion at 35 weeks — nearly full term — because of an unknown diagnosis given to her preborn son. However, when she first requested the abortion at 30 weeks, a committee of doctors said she could not undergo one because the baby boy’s diagnosis was not serious enough. She eventually was able to have one. The Quebec College of Physicians, which had penned the guidelines the doctors used to determine the woman should not have an abortion later announced that it would update its guidelines to ensure that women could have access to abortion — even at 35 weeks — without conflicts.

In addition, though abortion advocates like to claim that no one loves abortion, many abortion activists say otherwise. They call abortion an “act of love,” DuPont Clinic patient director Karishma Oza once said, “I think abortion in all trimesters is beautiful.”

When abortion advocates love abortion and view it is a freedom and a right, as empowerment for women and a societal good — and pro-life advocates view abortion as the direct and intentional killing of innocent members of the human family, no compromise can ever take place.
