Young woman chose life for her baby conceived in rape: ‘He was meant to be here for a reason’

At 20 years old, a woman who wishes to remain anonymous was living in a new city when she was drugged and raped. After learning she was pregnant from the assault, she chose life for her baby despite the pressures from society that tell women to abort their babies conceived in rape.

Even some pro-lifers feel that abortion is justified in cases of rape, but the truth is that a life is a life. The circumstances of conception do not make a human being more or less valuable, and this young woman knew that. She quickly moved away from her new city and back in with her father when she was 11 weeks pregnant. People questioned her as to why she would decide to keep a baby conceived in rape. She didn’t hesitate to tell them the truth: that though it was difficult at times, her child was worthy of life.

“[S]omething inside me told me this little nugget was going to move mountains,” the woman wrote in an essay for Love What Matters. “This baby was a MIRACLE. Not only because of the assault, but because I also struggle with endometriosis. Honestly, the minute I saw the tiniest speck on the ultrasound at 6 weeks along, I had this gush of love overwhelm me, along with SO many scary emotions as well.”

Endometriosis is a disorder in which tissue that normally lines the inside of the uterus grows outside of the uterus. It can be painful and can cause difficulty in conceiving children. Becoming pregnant with endometriosis is often an uphill battle, and when it does happen, is celebrated by women as a miracle.

This young woman wasn’t going to let her miracle go. The pregnancy wasn’t easy, but she said that every time she heard her baby’s heartbeat or felt the kicks, her love grew. Meeting her son face to face was “absolutely incredible.”

“Now, after (almost) 3 years of seeing my little baby grow into this amazingly smart, handsome, hilarious, and kind soul, it 100 percent confirms I did the right thing,” she said. “I never had ANY doubt about it, but seeing him explore this world, it really makes me know he was meant to be here for a reason.”

Women who have had abortions after rape have struggled with this second act of violence in their life, even saying that the abortion “was worse” than the rape and that abortion “just added more layers of trauma” to their lives. Women who chose life after rape have had a different experience, calling their babies “a perfect silver lining.”

Since her son’s birth, this young woman has had her share of ups and downs, including an abusive relationship that she was able to escape. Today she lives a happy life, admitting that being a single mother is hard, but that choosing life has absolutely been worth it.

“God knew what he was doing when he picked me to be his mama,” she said of her son. “I do not know how I got so lucky.”
